dear goya jerker, may i ask your opinion on gustave moreau’s study for lady macbeth?
Despite being painted in 1851, this one has an almost abstract aspect to it that I find quite similar to the work of Francis Bacon.
I think this painting has an almost ghosty and meaty quality to it. The thick rich red, the deep black background, the paleness of Lady Macbeth in the center, her hands floating by her sides. There almost seems to be a wound on her forehead, some sort of gouge into her skull.
I definitely think this is intended to be a painting of her right before her death. It reminds me particularly of the haunting way Lady Macbeth looked in her nightgown in The Tragedy of Macbeth (a movie I wholeheartedly recommend).
Personally, I am very fond of Lady Macbeth, of her complexities. She is a powerful woman within the narrative, but despite this she is deeply in a position where she lacks power (being a woman and not a man), something she draws attention to in one of her monologues. (Or is it a soliloquy?).
In this painting she seems almost overtaken by the darkness and the red. The red is almost reminiscent of blood, pouring down and pooling around her, staining her gown. It definitely reminds me of Carrie too (a comparison I saw others make in my research.)
While Carrie is engulfed by flames, by her righteous revenge, Lady Macbeth is engulfed by darkness and blood. What she has done for her husband is haunting her. I would almost guess it is moments before her death.
This painting is haunting, it invokes a kind of horror in me that's thrilling. I'd give it a 9/10 for the gore, the strong emotions, and the abstract use of color.
What do you think? Hot or Not?
