Rock Studies

Displeased with how I drew rocks in my previous upload, I took to studying new approaches I could make to drawing rocks after watching timelapses from other artists and picking up information that seemed the most important to me. It appears I had issues with contrast and depth all this time, I kept thinking "Oh I just need to draw a colored shape and then shade it" and then I'd struggle with how I was going to go about shading it, like what brush to use, what color, what opacity, where the light source would be, how to texture it, etc. My new approach involved making distinct black silhouettes and then using a lighter color on a new layer to come up with the shapes that could be making up the silhouette's shape using a transparent brush, then I would highlight the lit-up parts with another dab of that transparent brush, then on another layer, I'd add a blue reflective light in the heavily-shaded areas to make the rocks pop more as 3D surfaces, then I would overlay a colored light source over the lit-up parts of the rock to make the light source of the rock facing the light brighter. If I want the dark parts of the rock to pick up certain colors, I change the silhouette from black to another dark color. Overall, the dark cracks and crevasses as well as the highlights help give the rocks depth, instead of just drawing little nugget shapes and giving them shading and spamming a texture brush overlay on it. The process for each section of studies I did (the four variants of the geometric rocks, pillar with varying rock textures, and large cliff reflecting water) each took 35 minutes. Relievingly quick for a task that looked so dauntingly detailed. When you know what you're doing it feels way less daunting and getting the little details feel super satisfying. Another life-changing thing I took to consideration was the use of a gray canvas. Not only does it help me get a sense of color and contrast, but it reduces my discomfort in trying to draw in the daytime somehow, possibly because it makes it easier to see even with a glare from the sun peeking through my window. Most certainly gonna study rocks more, like with more types of rock formations and even character interactions with rocks, but for now I felt like uploading this because I just like it lol
