Wow, this is some fucked up shit. In the 1960s these guys did experiments on dogs where they shocked them and offered or didn't offer various means of escape in order to demonstrate the trauma response and a thing called learned helplessness.
Apparently the traumatized dogs just straight up wouldn't escape even when the opportunity was right in front of them, because they had been conditioned to believe that nothing they did would alleviate their suffering. The only way they learned to escape was if the researchers physically picked them up and moved their legs for them. Rewards / positive reinforcement didn't have any effect after the trauma of the shocks.
Fucked up experiment but it really says a lot about the trauma response.
