Holy thunder stumps, Batman! Look at those fur hammers! Those jumbo sized marshmallows! Those tree trunks for legs!
Look at those triceps and thunder stumps! And more importantly, notice how his nails don’t touch the ground when he’s in a standing position? That’s the general goal in canine nail care.
Humans have a “heel-first” gait and primarily walk with our feet flat to the ground. But dogs and many other mammals walk/trot on their toes with the bones in their feet held at a certain angle that allows their feet to act as shock absorbers for their limbs and joints.
A dog’s nails is also part of the foot’s anatomy. Having nails that are too long causes a dog to splay their toes out and alters the way and the angle on which a dog puts pressure on their feet (often leaning further back instead of resting on their toes). When that happens, it puts pressure on their joints and could also make the dog less steady on their feet.
With nail care, my motto is “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. We trim our dogs’ nails every week. Waiting longer than that between trims allows the quick to grow out slightly more each time with the nail, and it is truly a pain in the ass to get the quick to recede. Once you’re at the point where the quick is already very long, it’s going to be an uphill battle to get the nail back to a reasonable length.
For new owners, start desensitizing your puppy to the nail trim process ASAP. If you already have a dog that’s comfortable with nail trims, consider doing it weekly instead of monthly. If you have a dog that HATES nail trims, slowly work on counterconditioning/desensitization or build and teach your dog to use a scratchboard. I highly recommend the Facebook group “Nail Maintenance for Dogs” for people that have dogs who are uncomfortable with their feet being handled.

If you want to look like you have supermodel-long legs, all you have to do is stand next to Mona. She’s so stumpy and cute, it’s unreal! #Drewbert #Stumpbert #ItsMonaTime #ToBeShort #corgi

Watching two corgis wrestle is like watching two T-rex trying to slap each other. Their short stumps are just so ineffective. #Drewbert #Stumpbert #corgi
