Smart? No. Beautiful Space Action? Hell, Yes.
I may be in a small minority on this, but Luc Besson's "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets", based on the popular French graphic novel, is a perfectly fun, visually amazing sci-fi adventure that delivers exactly what it promises. Sure, writing-wise, it's not exactly the strongest, so I won't say people looking for a deep story or characters on the levels of those from "Star Wars" or "Lord of the Rings" will get much of that here, but if you want some great action, good comedy and a satisfying deal of likable characters (my favorite's Laureline, by the way), there's a chance you'll have a pleasant time watching this. And while it did drag a bit near the end, I AM still glad I saw this in 3D. Whether you think you'll like it for its beautiful visuals and fun action or hate it for its predictable plot and sometimes-slow pace, it's still worth checking out.
