Fall 2010 Styling Trends - Part 1

Everywhere you go it seems we're being bombarded by fall fashion, "back to school" sales and reminders that cooler temps are soon arriving. If you're feeling anxious about getting your hair into a new, reinvented fall style look no further. This week we'll be covering part one of styling trends with the next few weeks covering the rest of styling trends as well as fall color trends.

Trend #1: Volume

Voluminous styles are here to stay, I'm happy to report! This season the volume differs greatly from "bohemian" to "uptown" volume.

Nina Ricci Fall/Winter 2010 Runway

Nina Ricci showcased an "uptown" volume style. Very lady-like and sophisticated, almost retro in feeling. A very classic and full look that still looks very polished and could be dressed up or down. How to get the look: Luckily with a bit of practice and the right products this effortlessly classic style can be a snap to put together. Start with Redken Aerate 08, a bodifying cream-mousse for lasting volume. Apply wet and blow dry with a round brush for all day volume and finish with Redken Forceful 23 for 8 hour control and 24 hour humidity resistance.

Chloe Fall/Winter 2010 Runway

The style at the Chloe Fall/Winter runway was a classic blow out. Subtly sexy, this style is the envy of the modern woman. Look polished and put together without super sculpted styles or hours of work. How to get the look: Just like the hair at Nina Ricci you'll need the right styling products to recreate this look. Stylists used Redken Velvet Gelatine to create a light airy feel to the hair with all day weightless hold. (I love this product, see here.) Style using a round brush and encouraging volume.

Roberto Cavalli Fall/Winter 2010 Runway

I'm loving the "bohemian" volume look as seen on the Roberto Cavalli runway this season. A little disheveled but has a "I just rolled out of bed and look fantastic" feel to it that I love. It's also a perfect style for fall and lightweight scarves, like the model above. How to get the look: While hair is damp use a root boost in the crown area. (I really like the Redken Rootful 06 because it leaves the hair clean feeling, not sticky or tacky.) Create a messy center part then blow dry encouraging a bit of natural texture. Stick straight hair? No problem. Grab a large barrel curling iron and wrap random sections around the barrel, not to create curls but a little bend in the hair.

Trend #2: Exaggerated Side Parts

Most women wear side parts with modern hairstyles but this season the side part gets a bit of an extreme makeover.

Alexander Wang Fall/Winter 2010 Runway

On the Alexander Wang runway the side part gets a grungy wet-look makeover. While this look may not be very popular for street wear, just by using a little less product and a few tweaks you'll have a very fashion forward fall look. How to get the look: To create this look start by creating your exaggerated side part in wet hair then using a blow dryer, dry to the side it will lay to. Make sure to take a good portion of hair over the forehead but you may want to leave your eye exposed to see! I'd recommend using a very strong hold product to make your hair stay in this extreme direction. The models on the runway had their hair saturated with Redken Forceful 23 spray then blow dried to create the wet, shiny (almost helmet like) look. The models also had their ears exposed (which I'm not personally into) which many people don't find too comfortable for street wear.

Alberta Ferretti Fall/Winter 2010 Runway

Models on the Ferretti runway also had deep side parts but the look was a bit softer than what we saw on the Alexander Wang runway. Ferretti models had their hair swept back into a chignon with some natural texture encouraged. How to get the look: Start with damp hair and apply a thickening lotion like Redken Thickening Lotion 06 then blow dry. While blow drying, direct hair over the eye, the way it will lay in the finished style. Once hair is rough dried, sweep back into a ponytail and either leave loose (and encourage texture) or create a chignon. I like the idea of leaving it loose with a lot of texture (try Redken Wool Shake 08 for beachy-type texture (one of my favorites!)) for daytime wear. Keep in place with Redken Forceful 23.
