WEEK 4 HOMEWORK - responding to presentation about immersive story telling
Space is narrative. By creating a kitchen space, the audience is led into the kitchen to make food with the help of scanned objects, specific music and narration. By using VR glasses to explore the scanned food, seasoning bottles and some kitchen utensils, the audience will have a real feeling about the kitchen space. We transform any information in the kitchen into visuals and sounds, and we can also place some models in styly to help make the space more rich. In our project 1, we plan to choose a suitable music to set the atmosphere, use narration to explain the steps of food preparation and the impression of the kitchen space, so that the audience can experience the life of overseas students.
Capturing Spring in 3D: My Kitchen Scans & Spring Roll Memories
Living abroad, I’ve been craving those spring-only Chinese treats—like fresh spring rolls. So I followed online tutorials to make them in my tiny apartment kitchen. Every time I stood in the kitchen, I’d picture my mom cooking back home. Now I can make them just as smoothly as she does, and I wanted to freeze this moment somehow.
For this project, I handled the 3D modeling and sound design. We used Polycam, 3D Scanner, and CutCap to scan everything. When the 3D scans captured the crispy folds of the spring rolls, the messy spice bottles on the stove, and the flour smudges on the counter, it felt like the scanning process itself became a warm, personal ritual. Adding voiceovers and music later tied everything together.
Two big challenges popped up:
Scanning scale issues—big kitchen scenes vs. tiny props needed different software tricks.
Sound design—I struggled to layer rich audio textures.
But through this, I started seeing how VR could map "psychogeography"—how spaces hold emotional memories.
In the end, I hope these scans of my kitchen and spring rolls can let others feel the magic of China’s springtime flavors—those fleeting, seasonal bites that taste like home.
The statement of Project 1
For this group project, I was responsible for 3D model scanning and the creation of the entire scene. Our creative inspiration stemmed from the traditional Chinese dish, spring rolls. We chose the kitchen as the primary setting for our work, aiming to capture the essence of this space and evoke a warm, home-like atmosphere for viewers through the visuals. Additionally, the kitchen environment naturally aligns with the placement of our central subject—the spring roll—enhancing its cultural and contextual relevance.
During the production process, I encountered several challenges. For instance, during the large-scale kitchen scene scanning. After multiple attempts with Polycam, I noticed that its algorithm prioritized frequently scanned objects while hiding less-scanned ones, compromising the scene’s completeness. To resolve this, I switched to 3D Scanner, which ensured a more accurate and comprehensive reconstruction of the entire kitchen environment.
Overall, this was an immensely meaningful experience. Through hands-on practice, I gained a deeper understanding of how psychogeography can intersect with VR design. I also learned to select appropriate scanning tools based on different objects and scenarios. The process not only enhanced my technical skills but also reinforced the importance of adaptability and precision in 3D environment creation.
Idea sharing and concept description
In the process of realising the idea, I started by importing some of the models into STYLY, which consisted of elements from some of the footage I had scanned at Sydney Park, as well as background maps generated in AI by my group member Draco, and trees he had painted inside Openbrush. After I put these elements together, I realised that they were too split at the edges, making them not look like a whole. John then suggested moving the whole VR piece closer to a collage style. I realised that this was a good idea and I started to get my VR worlds to reach a similarity in colour, and despite the different sizes of the shapes, they were close in style and had a collage-like immediacy.
After I put the existing models in STYLY into my work, I realised that the existing models were a bit thin and didn't have enough heft to them, so I chose to scan some more of the ground and subsequently attach the existing models in STYLY to give the image a more weighty look. At the same time, I added some effects and animations to make them look more interesting. I created a few models of clouds, and some rocks to make the image look more complete, with sky, water and trees to look more like a landscape.
In addition, I added the bird model, with random motion animation and colour adjustment, with the existing sound effects, so that the viewer can intuitively feel the interesting world of the landscape the first time of enter.
ピンクのあいつのvTuberを動かすために

Ogaki Mini Maker Faireが明日から始まるのに、いまだに会場で展示するAR作品のデータをぽちぽちしています。ちょうど1月の秋田市文化創造館で使う映像のなかにピンクのあいつのVtuberを登場させる予定だったので、AR作品にはピンクのあいつが動く様子を描画しようと思います。
下記サイトを参考にVRMデータを用意しました。最初にProcreateでキャラクターの下書きを書いたらnomad sculptでメッシュを造形して、Blenderでボーンを埋め込み、UnityでVRMデータを書き出します。なんだか労力のわりにゆる〜い作品体験なので、モチベーションをキープするのが大変でした。
でもおかげで無事にピンクのあいつのVRMが完成して、mixamoや3teneにインポートすることができました。なんとか明日までにARをアップロードしないと!

OMMFに向けてメタバース空間の設計とアップロード

来週末に開催されるOgaki Mini Maker Faire 2022 (ommf)で出展するための準備が佳境に入ってきました。今回のommfではメタバース空間への取り組みとして、gatherを使った2Dチャット空間やSTYLYを使ったオンラインでのVR展示、さらには会場でのAR作品など、オンライン展示環境の準備が課題となっています。ひとまずSTYLYとgatherを遊んでみて基本的な操作やデータ形式はわかってきました。
今日はSTYLYを使ったメタバース展示のためにUnityでオブジェクトの空間設計を行い、STYLYへアップロードしました。はじめてVRに取り組みましたがだんだん完成に近づいてきました。
