Rockford SusCom sponsored Rockford, Michigan's quarterly polystyrene recycling event on January 18, 2025. Rockford's past polystyrene recycling events have been a huge success, with an average of over 400 pounds of EPS foam collected at each event in 2024. Many communities, considering the negative environmental impact of discarded foam, hold regular polystyrene recycling events to provide residents with an option to dispose of EPS foam. So, where does this foam go when it is collected in large quantities? Typically, communities will establish a partnership with a professional polystyrene recycler to transport the collected foam there for a fee. Some communities will also choose to purchase a polystyrene melting machine because of the large amount of foam each month. In addition to the community's demand for EPS recycling, many companies that use or produce foam also need polystyrene densifiers to handle waste materials, especially in the foam packaging industry. The compressed ingots will be crushed, hot-melted, extruded and cut into PS particles by granulation equipment, which are the raw materials for making a variety of environmentally friendly products.

Kalamazoo, Michigan, hosted a recycling event for EPS foam, electronics, and oral products on Saturday, December 28. By collecting waste products, these materials are prevented from entering landfills or being incinerated and are sent to the right recycling channels. For EPS foam, collection, cleaning, crushing, compacting, and granulation are one of the correct foam recycling channels to choose from. In addition to the wide application of new Styrofoam materials in the market, recycled foam is now gradually being used by more companies, and the technology for reuse is already quite mature. Foam recycling through pyrolysis and distillation processes

A team of experts from the UK and Massachusetts is working on a cost-effective way to recycle polystyrene packaging products. This innovative method has the potential to reuse up to 60% of polystyrene. According to estimates, the recycling rate of plastics in the United States is about 5% to 6%. The team used a pyrolysis and distillation process as a solution for foam recycling, in which polystyrene is heated in a vacuum, broken down into monomers, and purified. Polystyrene is ideal for chemical recycling, which is not only energy efficient but also potentially economically competitive. In addition to chemical recycling, physical recycling through machines such as foam densifiers can also achieve the reuse of waste foam resources. First, the foam needs to be pre-processed, such as collecting, sorting and removing impurities such as tape. Next, this lightweight material is compacted into compact ingots by a polystyrene densifier. After granulation, polystyrene ingots can be processed into recycled PS particles for use in the production of other environmentally friendly products. Foam densifier is a mechanical device used for foam recycling. This equipment can squeeze out air and even water from the foam. After the hot melt treatment, the volume of the white foam is greatly reduced, reaching a compression ratio of 90:1.
