Estella has a rather ugly set of scars on her left side that she received when she nearly drowned as a child. She was dragged under due to the strong current and in her panic was dragged across a jagged rock on the riverbed. She passed out from lack of oxygen and most likely loss of blood shortly later before being rescued by her Lapras.
