The order of things, the order of appearances, can no longer be entrusted to some subject of knowledge or other. I want thought to be paradoxical, seductive—on condition, clearly, that seduction is not taken to mean flattering manipulation, but a detournement of identity, a detournement of being. For thought does not work at the identification of things, like rational thought, but at their disidentification, their seduction, that is to say, their detouornement, in spite of its phantasmatic will to unify the world under its control and in its name.
