About the Story: Set before the events of All Systems Red, Compulsory offers a short, hilarious, and insightful glimpse into Murderbot's life back when it was still performing security contracts for a cheap mining corporation.

While stationed on a platform guarding a 47-ton stabilizer array (and trying to catch up on Episode 44 of The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon), Murderbot witnesses a human worker, Sekai, get knocked down an extraction shaft by her crewmates during an argument. Technically, HubSystem orders Murderbot to stand fast and wait for an incoming safety bot. But with a borked governor module, freshly minted free will, and an unpredictable streak of impulse control, Murderbot makes a choice: step off the edge, pull off a rescue, hack the company system so it thinks the rescue was its own idea, and try to get back to watching media before anyone notices.

A quick, brilliant read for any fan of sarcastic, media-obsessed, introverted security constructs!
