Today in my Media Arts Class:
Professor:
How does/doesn't fandom culture actively resist dominant culture?
Me:
As a queer woman of color I find that character s like me are never part of the "canon". I have little to NO representation. I am always having to read things in the subtext because I don't exist. By participating in the fandom by creating fanart and fanfiction it allows me to "ship" characters together that otherwise wouldnt be together canonly. (I then gave examples of Swan queen, supercorps, Hermione/Ginny pairings)
Straight (TM) classmate:
Ron was always destined to be with Hermione that's how J.K. Rowling wrote it and it shouldn't be manipulated.
Me:
REALLY BITCH?!
Did I stutter? or Do you not have ears to listen to anything I just said?!?!?!
