Today, the only ring with any significance is a wedding band worn on the finger, which symbolizes marriage. However, in Greek mythology, the finger wearing a ring was highly symbolic, as it corresponded with a god and said something about your personality.

Thumb: Poseidon. Poseidon chose not to live on Olympus with the other gods, so this finger symbolizes a very independent person who does not follow popular trends.

Index: Zeus. Because this is the strongest finger, it symbolizes a dominant, powerful person.

Middle: Dionysus. Like the god, this finger represents irreverence. The wearer cares little for other’s opinions and probably enjoys a good party.

Ring: Aphrodite. Per tradition, this finger symbolizes love and is still associated with marriage. Another belief is that this finger holds the Vena amoris, a vein that runs from the finger to the heart. 

Pinky: Ares. This finger corresponds with the god of war and conflict. The significance of a pinky ring has changed throughout history, so it may just be a consequence that the mafia wore rings on the fifth finger.
