Sometimes it does. This GIF required me to cut out the background of every single frame. I don't have a green screen so it was especially hard. 

And in this one, I had to animate the lightsaber in every frame. I realize if I were an after effects guru I could have probably done it much more quickly... but I'm not so I couldn't.

Other times it has taken me hours to make a GIF because I wanted it to be 500 pixels wide and still meet the 500kb limit that tumblr used to have. In order to optimize a GIF to do that, you have to sometimes do some very tedious work.

In this GIF I had to create a background plate and then remove the background of every frame. 

Even then I couldn't get it sized to 500 pixels wide. But it would have been the size of a postage stamp if I hadn't done that. 

Thankfully tumblr increased the GIF size limit to 1 megabyte and that has sped up the process on many GIFs. But even so, depending on the GIF, it can take a very long time to make them.
