What do you think Lily's life would have been like if Severus had decided to remain a good friend and not become a Death Eater or a mean person?

Oh, my. Here’s the thing… I kinda think they would drift anyway? But I think it would be WAY more amicable and they would still get together a few times a year and owl and such.

But my idea of Lily is that she was way more of an activist. Severus just didn’t want to do anything to get in trouble or to be bullied further. He didn’t want to make waves, that is. So that’s why he took what he (mistakenly) thought was the path of least resistance in hanging out with Macnair and Mulciber in school. I really think he placed too much trust in Lily’s kindness, and didn’t realize it had a hard stopping point. I think he really believed that even if he messed up in calling her what he did, she would forgive him.

But that didn’t answer your question totally. I think:

Lily’s love for Snape was always deep but platonic.

She never would have seen him as more than a friend regardless, mostly because she was in desperate need of a friend. She didn’t need a boyfriend. She needed a friend who understood and accepted her. That was Severus.

Her love for him as a friend is deep but not without limits.

If he hadn’t decided to become a Death Eater, she still would have loved him as a friend.

And here’s the big one:

I think she still would have ended up with James. She was friends with the rest of his group by the time she and Severus drift anyway (at least in my headcanons), so it was natural she would have hung out with James and some point and seen how much he’d matured over the next couple of years. So, Lily and Severus’s friendship honestly would have only extended as far as Severus’s tolerance for James.

TLDR; If Severus hadn’t called Lily a slur and become a Death Eater, he probably would have been the one to walk away from the friendship when Lily started dating his sworn enemy. Lily wouldn’t have ever walked away.
