It freaks me out a little bit how many people here fall under the “tumblr personality mesh”, as I like to call it.
Some background: I have a pretty uncanny ability to figure out who’s typing by reading anonymised words. When I’m at work, I can pinpoint which staff member has written an article (they’re often sent to me for editing) based on their word and grammar choices. Much of that too is influenced by the personality of the writer -- even in serious articles you can spot it.
But there’s a lot of tumblr that sounds exactly the same. It’s almost like this site merges people’s personalities together. Honestly, the efficiency at which it’s managed to do this is kind of scary. I think it’s why those bots can make such tumblr-authentic posts: there’s some sort of weird unspoken programming to the words and ideas so many people on tumblr convey.
I do think that this site has an enormous problem with echo chambers and groupthink, and from what I can tell, the style of speaking, writing, and language might be a symptom of that. I’m not saying you should change your ideals or anything of course, but...
Seriously. Be aware of it. Watch and listen. And think carefully. The ways we choose to speak can have interesting implications.
