you’re mindlessly dipping your feet into the motel pool after hours because you just had another heated argument with your temporary caretaker. it was frustrating sharing such personal and intimate space with someone you simply can’t get along with. hearing footsteps approaching, you take in a deep breath and turn quickly. ‘ mira, si venis a mandarme a la cama --- ’ but when you look up, you realize that this isn’t the club’s guarddog. this man is beautiful and with much longer hair. ‘ oh. i’m sorre. you light a cigarette between your fingers, looking out the plexiglass that keeps emily’s room enclosed. the music is blaring and you watch the clientele get off like every other normal day. except it wasn’t because ezra, the only paternal figure in your life, is in the hospital over the woman your brother is stupidly helping escape. rolling your shoulders back you blow out smoke and allow cool air brush across your naked body. ‘ I assume it’s only a matter of time before you try to escape right? ’ you know she’s one of the smartest women here. and she knows very well that without ezra here, she can make a breezier escape. ‘ have you started putting your little plan in motion? ’

I knew good and well this was the area where I had passed on potential love so it was no coincidence we took the long way to our pizza spot. besides, this was about the time the kids were freed so it wouldn’t hurt to say hi to that adorable little boy of his and his dad if fate is kind. stumbling back on my jimmy choos, my eyes go wide when I realize a small creature is clinging to my calve. ‘ hi, you! ’ bags are set down immediately and I pick him up in my arms to embrace him as though he were my own son and proceed to press kisses to his cheeks. ‘ this was the little guy I told you about! matty, this is emily. my best friend. ’

you like making breakfast when you get the time especially since emily refuses to let you pay her for taking up some space in her apartment. you know her favorites by now and you’ve gotten a lot better at making her matcha. when door creaks open, you turn over with a smile still flipping pancakes onto plate. ‘ wassgoodie m&m. you’re up type earlier today, you sleep okay? ’ you take the homefries from the air fryer, setting up the table as nicely as you can. ‘ I picked up some groceries after my run so don’t be shy, we got DUMB food for today. ’
