132 years since women won the right to vote in Aotearoa New Zealand.
19th September 1893.
On this day, in 1893, New Zealand became the first country* in the modern world to grant women the right to vote, followed closely by South Australia. To put that date into perspective, the same milestone wasn't reached in the United States until 1920. Most African, Asian and European countries did not pass women's suffrage until after WWI. Shockingly, it was not until 1944 in France, 1946 in Italy, 1952 in Greece, 1971 in Switzerland, and 1984 in Liechtenstein that full women's suffrage was achieved. *I know, I know, NZ wasn't officially a country at the time, you know what I mean though
My mother:
Suffrage Day ... September 19 2013 marks 120 years of women’s suffrage. In 1893, New Zealand became the first nation in the WORLD to grant women the right to vote ... I am remembering a time when I still lived in NZ when we had a woman Prime Minister, a woman Leader of the Opposition, a woman Governor General and a woman Chief Justice ... kia kaha wahine
Happy Suffrage Day, NZ!
It's 119 years today since New Zealand women got the vote (first in the world!) thanks to our great-great-great- grandmothers. We all have the right to a voice in New Zealand - let's make sure we can all use it!
