It's like her life was a straight line before he entered it; not it was twisted and curved and balled up in itself.
She watches out of the corner of her eye as he stands between Sam and Toby, hands in his pockets and head slightly bowed as the President speaks. He hadn't come home last night and while a part of her is grateful he'd listened to her need for space, the larger part of her just wants him to wrap his arms around her and tell her that it's gonna be okay.
There's shuffling and she looks up, realizing the meeting has broken up; Josh is out the door before she has a chance to say anything, and Sam sends her a sympathetic glance before following him. She sighs, moving towards the door when she's stopped by the President calling her name.
She turns, halfway to the door, looking at him expectantly when he beckons her closer, and she moves towards the center of the room, halting a few steps away from him. They're alone and she swallows, wondering what this could be about.
"If this is about the article in the Times, sir, I already have Carol-"
"This isn't about the article, CJ," Jed says quietly, and she stops, looking at him cautiously.
"Then what is it about, sir?" she asked, and Jed tilted his head, studying her.
"Is there a reason you and Josh can barely look at each other?" he asked softly, and CJ felt the stab of pain in her chest grow icy cold at the concern in the older man's eyes. "Is everything alright, CJ?"
She looked at him, trying not to cry and still feeling the prick of tears in her eyes, swallowing heavily to answer him.
"Not really, Mr. President. And I don't know if it ever will be again."
