Celebrate With Sugarloaf

Make this holiday a ski holiday.

We might be a little biased, but we think the best place to spend the holidays is here at Sugarloaf. There’s no better way for the family to experience a white Christmas than to get out and enjoy the snow. Check out some of our can’t-miss activities and events below to make this holiday season extra memorable.

Horse and Carriage Rides

It might not be a one horse open sleigh, but it’s pretty close. Rides will be offered free of charge from 3pm-5pm on Tuesday, December 26th. Meet at the front of the Base Lodge to participate.

S’mores on The Beach

Come and enjoy one of our favorite wintertime treats at your favorite mountain fire pit. Roast some free s’mores at The Beach from 3pm-4pm on December 27th.

Family Entertainment with Mr. Magic

Prepare to be amazed by a magic show that’s fun for the whole family. This special event will take place at 5pm on December 27th in the King Pine Room. Tickets are $5 per person, but ages five and under get in for free.

Climb For A Cure

Give back this holiday season by attending the first event of the 18th Annual Sugarloaf Charity Summit. Skin, hike, or snowshoe up to Bullwinkle’s at 4pm on December 28th and enjoy drinks and treats when you reach the top. Registration is from 10am-4pm at Guest Services, with a suggested donation of $10. Bring a headlamp, and have a plan for getting down the mountain, as transportation will not be provided.  

Amos & Friends Dinner

Head to the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center for an experience that both kids and parents will enjoy. Families eat a buffet-style Italian dinner, and kids get to hang out with Sugarloaf’s favorite characters – Amos the Moose, Pierre the Lumberjack, and Blueberry Bear. This event starts at 5pm on December 28th and costs only $5 for children and $12 for adults.

Family Lessons

Learn and ski with the whole family when you book a family private lesson. Perfect Turn also offers Bear & Cub lessons for children and their parents. Parents get to join their child’s lesson and learn tricks for teaching their kids how to ski. Kids must be at least two years old.

Fireworks on The Beach

2017’s going out with a bang. Head to The Beach December 31st at 9pm and celebrate the New Year with free fireworks. Then, once the kids are in bed, check out The Crown Vics at The Widowmaker and dance until the Ball drops.

Stay Warm and Ski More

The cold never bothered us anyway, but just in case...

We’re no stranger to cold weather here at Sugarloaf, but this week is supposed to get particularly chilly. Fortunately, we’ve mastered the art of staying warm, so we’ve decided to pass on a couple tips. The more you know, right?

Know Before You Go

Always check the weather before you head out for a day on the slopes. You won’t know how to dress unless you check the weather, temperature, wind speed, and humidity – all major factors that affect how cold it might get on the slopes that day. Keep in mind that due to changes in elevation, different weather conditions can exist on different parts of the mountain. Take Advantage of Heated Products

From hand warmers to heated boot liners, heated products are one thing we can count on to help keep us warm regardless of the weather outside. Don’t have any? Lenz heated gloves and Hotronic heated insoles and socks are available for purchase at Downhill Supply Co. And just in case your batteries run out, make sure to stock up on a pair of hand warmers, which are available for purchase in just about all of our retail locations and lodges.

Layer Up – Properly

It’s important to wear clothes that’ll keep you warm, but not so warm that you’re sweating. Make sure not to overdress. On slightly warmer days, wear synthetic layers that will wick away sweat while still letting your skin breathe, then on colder days crack out those wool layers. Get cold toes? Your base layers might be the culprit. The only clothing that should be tucked inside your ski boots is your socks. To avoid uncomfortable wrinkles that can cut off your circulation, we recommend wearing three-quarter length base layer pants - also available at Downhill Supply Co.

Take Care of You

Your body needs to be in prime condition in order to carry out important tasks, such as generating heat on a cold day. Help your body help you by fueling up in the morning and throughout the day, staying hydrated, and getting enough rest.

Stay Active

This might sound redundant during a day of skiing, but make sure to stay active. Whether you’re standing on the side of a trail or sitting in a chair for an extended amount of time, you can get you cold fast on a chilly day. So do your best to keep moving. Rub your palms together, shake your ankles out, or play a couple hand games. If all else fails, take a minute between laps to do some jumping jacks or run around a bit. It might sound silly, but it’ll keep you warm.

Don’t Ignore Frostbite

Still can’t seem to heat up? Don’t ignore it if you’re feeling too cold. Frostbite can have lifelong consequences, and even on a powder day, staying out is just not worth it. Take the time to go inside, kick your boots off, order a hot cocoa, or take a seat by the fire pit – Bullwinkle’s is the perfect mid-mountain pit-stop for chilly days. And when you’re ready to head back out, the slopes will be waiting.
