Suggest Solution to the problem

I strongly believe that in order to change the way people perceive Middle Eastern Muslim women they have to change their mentalities which can be possible with education. If we as a society become more educated about people or things that seem different from us in order to understand them instead of making assumptions and responding with respect instead of ignorance.

The second solution is to be involved without imposing. Helping a different country, culture, or people with religious backgrounds needs to be in a respectful and a mutual gesture from both the side that is helping and being helped. Many times people with privilege with impose what they think is best when they can simply ask what the countries needs or if they even need help to begin with.

The third solution would be to involve a wider range of discussion in university settings which also involves education however, this would be more specific. Universities can develop curriculums specifically targeting educating students about the Middle East and include more counties. They can also include a wide discussion about the background of Middle Eastern cultures and religion. Also, I would be helpful if the professor/instructors teaching these course could be from a Middle Eastern background or have that knowledge so they can deliver the message in confidence and in that way there will be a less chance of false information about these sensitive topics.

Suggested Solutions

The issues surrounding pregnancy are very complex. Prior to reading Liisa Makela’s case study, I would suggest for employers to strive to maintain a high dyadic relationship with his/her employees in order to prevent discrimination in any way. Although maintaining positive, high quality relationships tend to not be a factor in preventing discrimination, I would still suggest to fix this issue starting with employers. Managers, supervisors, employers, etc must be educated and reminded about the causes of pregnancy discrimination. Initiating required seminars for both employers and employees should be the first step in fighting this issue.

If employers are trained to not be discriminating towards pregnant workers, there will be unconscious bias from coworkers. People are quick to think negatively of a woman once she is pregnant. Motherhood triggers stereotypical assumptions that question the dependability, professionalism, and commitment of a worker. Rules and guidelines must be implemented to help reduce the likelihood that negative assumptions will affect decisions made in the work place. The creation of anti-discriminating rules will help maintain a more positive work environment but, the stop of pregnancy discrimination overall depends on cultural changes regarding the way our society thinks and perceives women to be.

Reasonable solutions to an issue such as pregnancy discrimination are difficult to create but one step to prepare potential victims (anyone who can bear children) would be to teach them. Educational classes that teach the legal rights of mothers and fathers in the work place, explain legal acts such as the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, and emphasis on empowering these potential parents can aid in eliminating pregnancy discrimination in the work place.

The solutions listed above are not direct solutions but can help women be equal to others in the work place.

SOLUTIONS

How do we create a safe environment for the female breast?

·         Encourage breastfeeding to bond with our own bodies and to allow our children to get a head start at accepting breasts for a big aspect of what they are.

·         Encourage public breastfeeding (LEGALIZE IT EVERYWHERE) so people can understand that there is nothing shameful about it.

·         Eradicate the state laws that criminalize the exposure of the female breast and not of the male breast.

·         Once eradicated, women need to exercise their newfound rights to expose their breasts.

·         Women need to encourage body positivity among each other by making comfortable environments for talk about body issues, as well safe areas to free our bodies.

·         Positive female encouragement gives leeway to many effective forms of body positivity.

9th Post: Suggested Solutions.

             One possible solution for the advertisement problem was actually proposed by Annieelainey. She described how she started throwing away her magazines and stop looking at advertisements in order to, in a way, detox from all of society’s pressures. One solution might simply mean to have people stop paying attention to all of the different advertisements available to us. This would mean throwing away magazines, not looking at billboards, and other such necessities. This solution has a couple of flaws though. This solution is really more tailored to those who need to stop paying attention to advertisements for their own mental and physical health. This is not a solution for the advertisement problem as a whole. I can imagine that there would be a group of people that wouldn’t care about advertisement. In addition, it’s almost impossible to remain oblivious to ads for an extended period of time, simply because ads are everywhere.

              Therefore, another solution would be to continue to raise awareness about sexist and biased advertisements. It is important to have people understand what they’re being exposed to on a daily basis. They need to understand that what they’re seeing is not the truth in any sense of the word. It is a fabricated reality designed to make people buy things by bringing up outdated gender roles and sexist images. People need to understand that there will never be a woman, or person, that perfect.

               A final solution would be to pressure companies to begin producing more realistic advertisements. This will probably need to be done over time, seeing as how it is a delicate matter. Should enough people band together, it would be possible to force advertising companies to start promoting more realistic advertisements. This will still be a difficult endeavor simply because the company’s ultimate goal is to sell more product, and unfortunately, sex sells.

Some suggested solutions for stopping/alleviating slut shaming (which in turn will hopefully have an effect on rape culture) are:

1. Instead of teaching girls and women not to dress a certain way in order to avoid negative sexual attention, boys and men should be taught not to teach females as sexual objects. This is an idea that goes back to ancient times, but it does not mean that it has to continue into the future. Similar to the idea that women are property is outdated, so must the idea that a woman’s value is in her purity and sexual repression. If men are taught that women are worth more than their physical aspects, it may create change with the prevalence of rape culture. This core belief that women are objects instead of people is what allows men to treat women in whatever way they please. If they are taught at a young age to believe otherwise, there would not be such a widespread dislike for females to be proud of their bodies.

2. At the same time, in order to stop the use of slut shaming by men to oppress women, women must stop slut shaming each other. By using the label of slut to oppress other women, it only reinforces the idea that it is acceptable for men to do the same. Women use slut shaming as a way of competing with one another, but this action only prevents women as a whole from advancing. If women were to empower one another instead of oppressing others based on race and class, it would be easier to create change with males. This is a core idea that would take time to really address.

3. Additionally, institutions must stop limiting how females are allowed to dress because it is deemed “inappropriate.” Often times schools especially are guilty of saying that females cannot dress a certain way because it is “distracting” to their male classmates or instructors. Instead of expecting men to be mature enough to not objectify women, those females are expected to fit certain regulations. This only works to reinforce a cycle of sexual oppression and misogyny. A woman can display her body for fear that men will not be able to control themselves. This idea is what fuels a society that supports rape culture. Women should be able to wear what they please without fear that they will be attacked. This begins with having more leniency in clothing at a younger age.

Suggested Solutions

1)      Proper funding

·         More LGBT health services that are lacking

·         Can improve the resources that we already have out there

·         More beds in the shelters

·         More shelters

2)      Enforce the law

·         The 32 states that don’t have any laws or policies that prevent this type of stuff from happening can make and enforce laws that prevent this from getting worse.

·         The states that do have those laws in place are still doing nothing about this issue, but if they are pushed to enforce the law then landlords cannot prevent somebody from buying or renting based on their gender identity or sexual orientation.

·         Enforcing the law can decrease the LGBT homelessness population.

·         Less sexual assault and harassment.

3)      Create more LGBT friendly homeless shelters

·   Maybe creating more LGBT friendly shelters will help make them feel more comfortable when they reach out for help, (I know this kind of contradicts what I said earlier about acceptance, but you can’t always change someone’s mind. So, you have to come up with a solution to that as well).

·   Definite decrease in the transgender population being out on the streets.

·   Since the won’t be out on the streets, there will also be a decrease in how many transgender people get sick both mentally and physically.

·Acknowledge negative aspects of machismo when you see them

Like I stated in the 5th post, I think that it is important to acknowledge negative actions of machismo when we see them. Because it is so engrained in Latin culture, people become accustomed to it and see nothing wrong with their actions. One must put the issue in to perspective for them. It may help to make them think about how they would feel if someone did hat they were doing to their mother, daughter, etc. Although I think it should be a matter of general respect towards everyone no matter the identity.

·Spread awareness

When I first began this project, I personally only thought about the effects machismo has on women; as I continued my research I became aware of the many ways machismo can effect boys as well. I continuously think about my youngest brother who is 6 and the negative effects machismo can have on him. I believe that if we spread awareness about the many outcomes negative aspects of machismo can have on boys and girls, people would try to change some aspects in their parenting for their child’s sake; at the end of the day, a parent only wants the best for their child.

·Set a new status quo

Like scholars Ponjuan and Sean stated in my first web source, we should set a new status quo. By setting one and having people exemplify it, people may want to become like that person or just become conscious of the negatives machismo provides. A new norm, with the help of example leaders, can has the power to change the mindset of young generations, therefore ending what seems to be a never ending cycle of machismo.
