I was feeling nostalgic for the local anime conventions of old. Ended up on this site with photos of Sugoicon from the early 2000s:
These are from 2001-2002. Sugoicon was the first convention I ever attended, starting with its conception in 2000. I was a regular until 2006, when I discovered dating and lost track of the anime scene. Lame.
I still have this very clear memory of wandering the dealers room while listening to the Brave Fencer Musashi soundtrack on my portable CD player. I don't know why this sticks out to me of all things, but I have a lot of affection for it.
That's my friend Tony dressed as Irvine in the last photo. I don't believe I ever took photos myself, which I'm kinda sad about.
Sugoicon was originally held at the Holiday Inn Cincinnati Airport location. Here's a comparison of the lobby in 2001 vs now:
#throwbackthursday I was cleaning out a box of old paperwork yesterday and found a cache of 2004 anime con stuff! Who else remembers the days when nearly all con badges were flimsy pinbacks? #tbt #animeconvention @animecentralofficial @ohayocon_official #sugoicon
I’m at @sugoiexpo today from 2-8pm, 10-6 tomorrow, and 10-4 Sunday!! Sugoi Expo is a new Orlando convention with lots of fun panels, events, artists, and vendors! Come find me at booth G3 towards the back of the Seminole AB Room 🐈🐈🐈 . . . #sugoi #sugoiexpo #sugoiexpo2022 #sugoiexporave #sugoicon #convention #floridaconvention #floridaconventions #animecon #animeconvention https://www.instagram.com/p/CiSsDCoLzly/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Sugoicon is the first week end in September this year instead of November. :(
I suppose this is good because I’m moving in November, but that means I’m late at applying for an artist alley table and that I have only two months to get more art ready.
Registration is now open for 2014. Follow the link for the form!
September 5-7 @ the Sharonville Convention Center!
Musical Guests include Yoshiki Fukuyama and Ray!
Colossalcon is now a definite possibility! I will also for sure be at Matsuricon and Sugoicon and most likely FandomFest as well. Is it June yet?! Is anybody on here going?
So last night I had a dream that I went to Sugoicon and I was panicking because I was $5 short of the fee to get in and Dante Basco was the one taking payments and making name tags and such and after I found the money, I went into a hall and found him being a fabulous gay man and I woke up very confused.
