Once again reiterating that it is okay for perisex trans people to white lie and say they're intersex if it helps them access gender affirming care where otherwise they wouldn't be able to.
I can't share a screenshot as it's a private group on social media, but a transmasculine group I'm in has a post by someone (perisex) getting gender affirming metoidoplasty, but their insurance (guessing they're in the US) has their surgery labelled as:
"55980 Intersex surg female male"
Disclaimer I'm from the UK and not familiar with US insurance. But I looked up that phrase verbatim and found the US National Library of Medicine site with information about the code.
Granted, one of the terms associated with this is simply "SEX TRANSFORMATION F TO M", however, the person's insurance put it through as "intersex surg female male". Here are the other terms used with this code according to the above site:
Also code 55970 appears to correspond to "intersex surg male [to] female".
Am I saying this is ideal? No. Not at all. But with the attacks on trans rights, sometimes people's doctors are putting through surgeries as "intersex" when they're not so people can access life saving care.
The flip side, is this is only possible due to the medicalisation of intersexness and the coercive nature of forced intersex surgeries and the extreme willingness of the state to carry these out.
However, that is not the fault of perisex trans people. It might be a loophole they're talking advantage of to access care, but the existence of that isn't their fault. When I've brought up my stance on this before I've been attacked about it on here, but I hold this view steadfastly.
Perisex trans people are just trying to get by, same as you. But don't take out your ire at the system on them for trying to survive.
Likewise, if a non-trans intersex person needed to pass as trans for whatever reason, I would have 0 issue with this (I am an intersex trans man).
Stop being so aggro against your trans siblings - I see this and it worries me. Now is not the fucking time. I'm in the UK which is also becoming much more queerphobic very fast. Now is not the time for infighting.
Perisex trans people passing as intersex to access care should not be denied rn. It is life or death.
Arguing against this also ignores the shared trans and intersex history of having to pass as each other to avoid scrutiny from out-groups. I am a queer historian, I have many many sources for this. Up until the 60s/70s in Britain you pretty much couldn't transition without being considered intersex. As a result, many ostensibly perisex trans people had to fake being intersex to access care.
I know I harp on about it, it's just my fellow intersex people have been very cruel about this issue before and I want to put forward a differing point of view.
a) A world in which trans people didn't pass as/their doctors didn't mark them as intersex for transition healthcare - leading to suicides because of a lack of access to that care?
b) Alive trans people but they do have to lie about being intersex sometimes and that sucks, but it's better than them being dead.
