I really love romantic comedies.
Like, they’re tropey. Some of them are toxic as hell. They’re silly. But I still love them, and I have a really huge collection and watch them all the time, especially when I’m sick or when I feel really depressed.
It’s funny because I hate romantic comedies in writing and fiction, but when it’s like 80s or 90s or even early 00s films, I will watch them over and over again. Sandra Bullock is probably my favourite leading lady, and I developed a crush on her really early. So I go all the way from While You Were Sleeping to The Proposal with her.
I think one of my very favourite things about Glen (among the many) is that he shows zero shame, watching and enjoying these movies with me. He’ll suggest the ones he wants to watch, he laughs and loves them too, and he’s not ashamed of watching them at all. You know those asshole guys who are like ‘oh haha no you can watch those but I don’t need to’ and they say it about animations and children’s shows and romances and romantic comedies. Yeah, Glen doesn’t have that toxic masculinity bone in his body. I think his favourites are The Proposal and Two Week’s Notice.
When I did media studies at university, all these guys rushed to talk about how Tarantino was a god, and then they spent all their time absolutely shitting on largely ‘women’s genres’ like that was cool. They were slammed so hard in class. It was immensely satisfying to be validated at an academic level. It turns out every genre is kind of stupid sometimes, what matters is that you love it. :D
