DAY 32: Earth Apple by The Suitcase Junket
Album: Make Time Release: January 6th, 2015 Genre: Folk Rock
When I think of one-man bands, I tend to think of circus-like characters that strap contraptions of bells and whistles on their backs, hands, feet, you name it. Like, an excessive amount of instruments for one person to be playing. It ends up kind of clunky and poorly put together, hence its relegation to more of a sideshow act rather than a legitimate art. If the amount of required multitasking could be restructured to fewer instruments but focused into a better sound, the legitimacy of a one-man band actually could come to fruition. Ladies and gentlemen, The Suitcase Junket is a solo act that upon my discovery completely redefined what it means to be a one-man band. The mastermind behind this ingenious idea is none other than Matt Lorenz, a Vermont native who trained himself in both guitar playing and throat-singing, a method of overtone singing that derives from East Asia. After graduating in 2004 from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, Lorenz began his journey of adaptation and evolution as a musician, adopting a a hi-hat and kick-pedal bass to occupy his feet and incorporating slide guitar for a back-country bayou feel to his songs. By 2010, his talents were ready for a full-length album that was independently released (as all of his albums have been under his own label Making What I Want) named Sever and Lift, quickly followed by Knock it Down in 2011. Then...silence. Plenty of popularity around his native New England area from festival tours, but nothing new coming from the studio. A long 4-year gap between albums was all it took for Matt Lorenz and The Suitcase Junket to return back and better than ever. Make Time was the highly anticipated third release from The Suitcase Junket, ushering in a new era for this unique artist’s sound. Earth Apple was actually the first song I ever heard by the band, recommended through similar artist choices. The opening chord immediately sets the tone, parting away from his folk roots and instead cozying up with blues influences. The more intense sections that introduce the hi-hat are remarkably well syncopated for being played by one person, catching the attention of the BBC who invited Lorenz for a live studio session in October of 2015. Considered one of the best sessions in BBC’s catalog for 2015, his rendition of Earth Apple is somehow even better than the studio recording. You’ll just have to see it for yourself. At times you almost forget that this is all the same guy doing everything on the track, which is only a testimony to how fantastic The Suitcase Junket is.

The Suitcase Junket Artist, tinkerer, tunesmith, Swamp Yankee — The Suitcase Junket is a one-man salvage specialist with an unorthodox approach to his craft: singing into the hollow of a Dumpster guitar and railing on a box of twisted forks and bones. He belts out mountain ballads ‘til the house sings back. On Saturday, June 25, at 8pm, FreshGrass Presents The Suitcase Junket in his MASS MoCA…
