Best thing since sliced bread.. the tea strainer. I love my suki teapot but I usually only have time to enjoy using it at the weekend, that means all weekday tea is teabags, until I got this from my friend @wilsyni. It's a suki teastrainer, designed to be used with a cup it makes a very tasty tea leaf tea in minutes. I use it all the time.

Got this mug for my birthday thanks to @wilsyni, was a great wee surprise and I was so excited to get my first cup of Belfast Brew from it.... pity it turned out to be cracked, I think it took a knock during shipping. So disappointed, I contacted the company to advise them of the broken mug thinking they would refund my gifter, but to my surprise they went the extra mile and sent me a new mug, free of charge, that’s customer service, something I should be used to from local Norn Iron companies but it’s easy to forget the personal touch from customer centric companies.

Love my new mug, and as of today it’s been promoted to my number 1 mug as I broke my white mug in the sink today!

After a morning of cruising coffee shops, working away, downing coffees at an alarming rate, I was wandering home for a late lunch and chillax. Strolling through Stranmillis, I was suddenly overtaken by the urge to visit one of my favourite coffee shops in Belfast, as well as my friends: the guys at Indigo.

They recently turned one (happy birthday) and I wasn’t able to make it to the event unfortunately. After belated anniversary wishes, I ordered a Pink Grapefruit tea as it had been a heavily caffeinated morning. I’ve always found that it’s best to let Suki tea to cool so you can really appreciate the flavour. I nearly went for the Blood Orange variety, but was extremely pleased that I went for the Grapefruit version to clean my palette and reawaken my taste buds. Served in the iconic Suki teapts and on a wooden slate, it looked good as well as tasting good.

There have been a few changes at Indigo of late, including a new coffee machine. They are also bringing in a range of new coffees including, Five Elephant, who are coffee roasters from Berlin (I never knew they roasted coffee in Berlin – everyday is a school day). Since they have opened there has been constant improvement to the premises, with the opening of the backroom, ever ongoing development of new gelato flavours that are on offer, as well as a changing array of coffee varieties for the coffee connoisseur to try and experiment with. However, the biggest and most recent change is the outside seating area. Whereas before it consisted of a few picnic tables and chairs, it now is a properly fenced area with cast iron seating and static tables. It gives you the feeling of the coffee shop extending beyond the internal premises.

As always, there is a very chilled and relaxed atmosphere at Indigo, which is why it is one of favourite places to work. Part of this atmosphere is created by the non-commercial playlist that they have in the background. The musical mix is always a pleasure to listen to. At present, the balloons from the anniversary celebrations are still up and add to the friendly, jovial atmosphere that permeates Indigo. It is one of the friendliest coffee shops that I tend to go to – it is always welcoming, with incredibly friendly staff who will stop and have a chat with you or will happily advise you on the blends of coffee and tea that they currently have in. These guys are enthusiasts, but do not alienate the customers who do not have same obsession with coffee as they have, as can sometimes happen in specialist coffee shops and brew bars.

One of the major benefits of coming to Indigo is the quality of their WiFi reception. With small premises it easy to connect to the WiFi signal. However I am always blown away by the sheer speed of their internet download and upload speeds. As a web designer having a stable and fast connection is essential – I have actually been at the point recently, especially in Stranmillis and Botanic, of bringing my own WiFi connection with me, mainly due to the unreliability of the connection in some coffee shops. This is something that I never have to worry about at Indigo. It’s always on. It’s always stable. It’s always fast. The only criticism that I have is the lack of availability of power sockets in the establishment. They do have a single point to plug your laptop or device in; it also has USB ports to use so you can charge your iPhone without having to route it through your laptop (a very useful feature). Unfortunately there is only one point, so it can get quite competitive to get that seat with access. Normally, this isn’t an issue, especially as I appear to be one of few freelancers to have discovered this place. It’s a tiny, tiny point that is overshadowed by the great atmosphere, great coffee and great staff at Indigo. It is also more than compensated for by the blistering fast connection speeds.

Last week I was telling a friend of mine about this coffee shop and how it was one of favourite places to sit and work in Belfast. When I was explaining about the home made gelato they asked me what the difference was between gelato and normal ice cream. I didn’t know – it was top of my questions to ask as I walked in. To be honest it was one of the contributing factors for me coming in today. Gelato is different from ice cream as it contains less fat and sugar – you could say it is all the sinful feelings without the sinful consequences. The homemade flavours that they have are always interesting and always worth a try.

As always it has been an absolute pleasure to come to Indigo, to chat, to drink and to work / chill. I would highly recommend a visit to this great example of what an independent coffee shop should be.
