Today we are featuring #ArchivesPenPals for April's #ArchivesHashtagParty. This card was created by 6th & 7th graders at Shoshone Day School in Wyoming and was sent to Dr. Fred Loe who, in 1938, introduced sulfanilamide as a treatment for trachoma, achieving a 90% cure rate.

Okay so this guy back in like the 1930s discovered the first/one of the first antibiotics. And it would eventually go on to revolutionize medicine and stuff, which is awesome. But at first, people were skeptical. He hadn’t done a whole lot of human trials for this stuff yet. Then, his daughter got an infection so bad she nearly died. Regular medicine of the time didn’t work, so on a chance he gave her the antibiotic that he had found- and it worked!! He saved her life! I was so happy for that guy. Imagine how cool it would be to discover the thing that would save your daughters life. Like, iconic, right??
