Sully is playing straight tonight. A role that after living his life for almost nine years as openly bisexual with a very severe bias toward men, he no longer understands, but he’ll try his best, because tonight is going to be fun, and it’ll be worth it. He’s dressed nicely, a forest green flannel and a tight fitting tank with black skinny jeans that hug his body in all the right places. He’s sipping on a beer, and he’s waiting, “checking out chicks” and smiling at them as they pass.

Random tangent about ABL Liu and Sully, and how their identities are informed. Brought on by me pondering how my characterization of Liu has been influenced.

I think something that's always informed my characterization of Liu is how he's described at the start of "Homicidal Liu". He's academically engaged, he's well behaved, he's a good boy but good boys don't end up in his situation. I don't think this came out of nowhere, but Liu was still more or less a blank canvas of a character in JTK, so the emphasis stands out.

Systems can't always be sorted into reliable roles, but if Sully is dedicated to keeping Liu's emotional stability, then Liu is just as dedicated to ensuring the system's social stability, which in turn is made easier when he doesn't have the full brunt baggage of trauma.

But this dedication to establishing social circels also results in him being rather... passive.

While I gave Liu and Sully additional pronouns and preferences in presentation when establishing this AU, I didn't really want to settle on any specific labels for them.

But I have casually called Sully a woman, and think it's a term she would like for herself. And she also gave herself a name, seperate from the given one, once it was clear the distinction would be more convenient. As far as she's concerned, their family has brought them nothing but trouble, so why would she hold onto the names given by and tied to them?

Liu on the other hand, I think wouldn't really know his preferences for any specific terms whatsoever. He passively accepts peoples perception of him as a man, because that's what makes social interactions the easiest, and he doesn't have enough of an internal sense of self to quite determine wether he likes it or not. He wouldn't describe himself as agender either, since that would just make it needlessly complicated in his eyes.

And, of course, he stuck with the name Liu when the subject of names came up with Sully, because the name is already there and that's how people know him.

“Uh, ‘scuse me,” Sully clears his throat. “Can’t help but notice that you’re a strange kid in my apartment. So, if you don’t mind me askin’, what’re you doin’ here?” He pauses. “Can I help you somehow?”

Uuh I'm trying to decide what "A Bird's Lament" ideas I have in mind are worth making accompanying art for or not. I have some thoughts about how the system developed over the course of their life I think I can just make this a text post.

Since Sully formed to help the system deal with parental neglect, she handled homelife most of the time while Liu primarily took charge during school and other social situations/events. Sully has a very "looking out for the system and no one else" approach and didn't care as much for Jeff as Liu did.

During their teenage years, Sully gradually handed the reins over to Liu and only steps in during urgent situations. She becomes more able to stay conscious while Liu fronts and becomes aware of his presence. She attempts to manually front during JTK to stop Liu from taking the blame for Jeff's initial fight with the bullies, but fails.

Shortly after JTK, Liu's memory becomes incredibly spotty again between Sully becoming a more frequent fronter again, and her trying to shield him from the incident as much as possible. His sense of time is confused, he struggles to put together the current circumstances of his life, and the fact that his parents are dead and Jeff is missing, even when other people try to remind him.

He could dismiss similar circumstances around his earlier childhood as him just not remembering it well, but the current severity of his disorientation + him having obvious recent scars from an incident he can't remember do alert him to the fact that Something is going on and eventually leads to him finding out he's a system.

It's intially a nightmare scenario for Sully, but she could only hold the dam for so long between the stress of the situation making her dissociate a lot herself, and their lives being drastically shaken up. The two of them manage to become more cooperative and functional over time after becoming aware of one another and adjusting to managing their life together.
