AU where Irene Adler and Christine Daaé sing together at the Palais Garnier. Here are Christine as Adalgisa and Irene as Norma in Bellini's Norma. Both roles are traditionally sung in the other's fach, but I've heard the roles switched before to great effect.

I'm also working on a piece of them as Carmen and Micaela in Carmen, and as Angelina and Clorinda in La Cenerentola. I'm not too satisfied with them yet, though, so will post later.

En Simple Song #3, David Lang no solo escribe una canción, escribe una despedida sin rencor. En medio del artificio visual de Youth, esta pieza irrumpe como un instante de verdad suspendida, un canto de lo esencial que no necesita adornos porque lo humano, en su forma más vulnerable, basta.

Musicalmente, Lang opta por una estructura casi estática. La melodía es sencilla, silábica, como si las notas no fueran más que respiraciones ordenadas. La voz de Sumi Jo, delicada pero firme, flota por encima de la orquesta sin dramatismo, con una serenidad que conmueve más por lo que sugiere que por lo que dice. Cada acorde parece medido al milímetro para no perturbar el equilibrio emocional que sostiene la pieza.

La canción, lejos de ser simple, es una construcción refinada del silencio. Habla del amor, del dolor, del recuerdo y de la pérdida con una transparencia que desarma. Simple Song #3 no busca el impacto, sino la permanencia. Y por eso, una vez escuchada, no se olvida: se queda dentro, latiendo en algún rincón del alma donde las cosas importantes reposan sin ruido.
