I remember they planned to release a different song for this Sumikko movie in 2023? What was that about?

They did record a complete different song first but Yasutaka Nakata wasn't pleased with it.

About the song "Sumikko Disco" and Nakata's songwriting process:

Interviewer:

"Following 'Chocolate Disco' (2007) and 'One Room Disco' (2009), this is the third song in the 'Disco' series. Once again, the heavy, booming bass naturally makes your body move, and the way the 'Sumikko Disco' vocals are used near the end is fantastic."

Kashiyuka:

"Before Nakata-san created Sumikko Disco, he had actually come up with another song first. It was a completely different style of music. While we were recording that first song, he said, 'I want to make it a little cooler.' Then the second song he brought us was this simple, stripped-back, really cool track with lots of space in the arrangement. It was so much fun because he presented two completely different approaches to the exact same theme. At the same time, it was kind of sad knowing that only one of those songs would survive. The first one we recorded was also really gentle and adorable—it had a warm feeling that matched the story perfectly. So I thought, 'I guess that song will never see the light of day.'"

Interviewer:

"So... is there any chance we might someday get to hear that unused first version?"

Kashiyuka:

"It was written so specifically with Sumikko Gurashi in mind that I think it would be difficult to use it for anything else."
