Summer Sickness // Safe To Say
With my arms draped over Jazz and Tuckers shoulders we made our way down to the lab, they lay me down on a slab that somewhere in the back of my mind I remembered being covered in ectoplasm; if I was in a better state I definitely would have minded.
“Why are my eyes green?” my voice sounded thick, as if I had a cold.
“Why are bleeding is more important” Jazz shouted as they all crowded around me, a light appeared flashing in my eyes, as someone dabbed at the blood and someone else rubbed my back.
“I saw him” faces piled in around me and everyone seemed to be blurring together- I searched the room for the Ambassador and found him standing by the portal door staring in the green swirling mass. I tried to push people away and climb down off the table, hands held me back but I pushed against them
“Was it really him?” I said to the Ambassador, my body shook as my feet hit the floor. Everyone around me silenced as he turned to face me.
“Yes” he said simply, the storm of voices appeared again, was he okay where was he questions directed to me and other to the Ambassador. I stared at him as he ignored everyone else and just watched me. He held up a hand and everyone around me silenced, he closed the distance between us as I swayed on my feet.
“Samantha, I must ask your permission to enter your mind, once there I can access the problem”
“Can you do that, she not a ghost” I heard Jazz say from somewhere close by, he gently took my arm and held it up, I felt like I was going to throw up when I realised you could see through it.
“I’m afraid at this moment in time she is more ghost than human”
I nodded once and in once swift movement he had one hand behind my back and another on my forehead, and then I was falling.
I sat on the bench in the old graveyard like I had many times before, I remembered the times we came here in summer, Danny and Tucker moaning but ending up lying on the floor or upside down on the bench laughing, some people thought we were disrespectful, namely my parents but I always believed that the dead would enjoy having a little life in the place. But now I sat alone, sniffing and shivering my legs drawn up to my chest. I couldn’t remember how I’d gotten there until I looked up and saw a man towering over me.
But not really a man, a ghost in a man’s form, his eyes were nearly all black now.
“I’m sick?” I asked simply.
“yes” he replied. I nodded and looked around sniffing more.
“What’s going to happen to me?”
“I don’t know” he said matter of factly “May I sit?” he motioned at the space beside me and I nodded.
“We are in your mind Sam”
I nodded not having guessed as much but not being surprised.
“You are unconscious in the real world, and came here to explain to you what I believe is happening.”
I nodded again, I could feel myself shivering as my whole body ached and felt as if any moment it could melt.
“You have caught Danny’s sickness, I theorize it is due to your previous ghost state that you may have had an underlying-”
“My ghost state?” I interrupted looking at him confused with blurry vision.
“A number of years ago, you were taken over by the radical ghost known as Undergrowth were you not”
I nodded, thinking back to that day; I remember how it had been like I wasn’t in control of my own body, but that I was at the same time. It was as if I knew what I was doing was but evil but I couldn’t stop myself, it was all that mattered.
“But then Tuck’s in danger too? He was taken over by Desiree a few years before in the same way”
“yes but as you and Danny have been” he paused “intimate in way that he and Tucker have not I believe that Danny may have had this illness long before you knew and has inadvertently passed it on to you”
“Well remind me to hold that against him” I grumbled looking around at the graveyard in my mind.
“Samantha, I believe the only way to help you is to take you into the ghost zone, to Frostbite and see if he can modify the treatment he’s given to Danny to save you.”
I looked up at him his dark eyes, as off putting as his blurry form.
“Will I even survive going on to the ghost zone?”
“Jack and Maddie and setting things up for your real body”
I nodded, sniffing again and hugged my knees tighter to my body.
“Will I see Danny?”
“Maybe, it depends if you can withstand consciousness. Your dream of Danny, I believe that was a mind projection much like I am doing here. This may have been made possible by the sickness bringing forth your ghostly abilities”
I nodded again, taking a deep breath of the cold air around us.
“Okay” I whispered. He turned to me and held out his hand. I looked at him through watering eyes, tears or more blood I daren’t check. “I’m scared” I choked out. His face softened then into a mask of kindness that I hadn’t seen from him in our short time together. With nothing to lose I leant forward and lay my head against his chest. I felt his arms wrap gently around me as I registered the lack of heartbeat, I squeezed my eyes shut and again everything was gone.
The next time I opened my eyes I was somewhere different again, monsters blurred in and out, faces I recognized in between them as a cold air blasted in my face. My head lolled to one side and beside me I saw a shock of white hair. I reached out and my hand hit glass. I realized then I was in some sort of glass containment, like a coffin. I realized the irony of that as for the third time everything faded to black.
