Essay for the painting class of Professor Christian Macketanz at HfBK Dresden, 2026: 'A road, a ribbon, a dotted line'

I wrote about painting, choices and life paths in an ode to ordinariness as part of this essay for Professor Christian Macketanz's painting class at the University of Fine Arts Dresden (HfBK Dresden). Teaching 'Art Writing: Developed and Distilled Upon the Page', International Summer Academy of Fine Arts, Salzburg, 17–29 August 2026

This summer I will teach a course in art writing and editing at the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts, Salzburg, from 17–29 August 2026. This course centres the “art” in art writing and asks you to get up close and personal with why art matters to you. It focuses on language ­to ask what it means to write authentically and accessibly about your opinions on and experiences of art, and how to make that compelling for a reader.
