Pediatric giant retinal tear: Penetrating eye injuries are relatively common in children. BB guns, pencils, sticks, fishing hooks, they all can find a way into the eyes of careless children. As a father I can say that it’s impossible to protect your children against themselves or their friends at every minute of the day. Unfortunately some of these injuries can cause severe retinal damage. This child, for example, developed a giant retinal tear when the vitreous was pulled forward after a small injury. These complex pathologies are particularly difficult to treat in young eyes, and are prone to retinal scar formation (proliferative vitreoretinopathy) or to interfere with normal visual development in the cerebral cortex (amblyopia). #summerinjuries #retina #surgery #ophthalmology (at Memphis, Tennessee)
