Dr. Patricia Era Bath, circa 1970. She was the first woman to lead a post-graduate training program in ophthalmology.

Dr. Bath invented the Laserphaco scope to treat and remove cataracts. She was the first Black American woman to complete a residency in ophthalmology at NYU. She also co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness.

Eye prosthesis is the first to restore sight lost to macular degeneration

In a Stanford Medicine-led clinical trial of a wireless retinal prosthesis, people with advanced macular degeneration regained enough vision

A tiny wireless chip implanted in the back of the eye and a pair of high-tech glasses have partially restored vision to people with an advanced form of age-related macular degeneration. In a clinical trial led by Stanford Medicine researchers and international collaborators, 27 out of 32 participants had regained the ability to read a year after receiving the device.  With digital enhancements enabled by the device, such as zoom and higher contrast, some participants could read with acuity equivalent to 20/42 vision. The results of the trial were published Oct. 20 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

I first saw this reproduced in the book Crucial Interventions by Richard Barnett, a beautifully-illustrated book about historical surgical methods, and immediately loved it.

just learned not everyone sees the Dots????????????

yknow the dots that make up your vision! the ones that are most visible when looking at a light solid-colored surface and/or in low lighting conditions but are always there and always moving?

i thought i could see atoms as a kid because of the dots

both my sisters see the dots also! but my mom can't? i thought everyone saw the dots!!!!!!!!!! what is this??????

not like visual snow it's nto that obtrusive or big. like really really really tiny tv static or like the pixels on a computer
