PIPER'S CURSE┃Theme: Validation┃Précis: A fool's errand, seeking praise, misguided, loss, lamentation, realisation. ▪︎ For #summerpoetrymiracles, July Prompt "You Do Not Have To Be Good." ▪︎ Description: This poem refers to man's timeless need for validation. All the things we've been told, the trends we follow, the behaviours we develop have all been in the name of fitting in and garnering praise, a societal expectation. We want to be seen doing the right thing, what is expected. In this poem, a man falls prey to exactly this kind of thinking. This man learns that benevolence is good and wonders at its appropriateness. However, in his task, he realises that he cannot keep up. The piper's reference is that of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, and in this case society is both the piper and the 'rats'; it is difficult to say where one begins and one ends. The man is cursed to be under the "piper's spell" and just like all the rats respond to the piper's tune, he too, has joined in. And having tried to keep up with the constant demands in his pursuit of praise & admiration rather than an innate goodwill, he has learnt that he has lost much, both materialistic and otherwise, and laments about how life has treated him despite all his "good" deeds. And after a long time, finally, comes the realisation that in fact one doesn't have even 'have to be' good. And that besides, if one needs to truly achieve anything, it is not enough to be "good" (conventionally speaking, that is), that it takes something else entirely, that it must be done without regrets, & that perhaps that is the point of life, the answer of a life truly (and well) lived.
