What I’m Reading: November

1. California Sold (isthatyoularry) - A fake-relationship AU between to lifelong best friends.

2. Whirlwind (dolce_piccante) - Acclaimed actor, Hollywood heartthrob, and Oscar nominee Harry Styles seems to have the world at his feet, but seeks out an old friend when he needs a date for his big night.

3. Wrapped in Light, in Life, in Love (orphan_account) - Of all the things to happen while taking care of his niece for a month, falling in love with his boyhood crush all over again is probably the highlight of Harry’s autumn.

“Lou? You home?”

Harry doesn’t really have to ask, because he could smell Louis out in the hall, all sweet pregnant omega, sickly sweet vanilla and sugar. It had been nearly overwhelming, at first, how strong Louis smelt, but as the months went by, he started smelling not less like himself, necessarily, because he still smells like the most delicious thing, but more like Harry.

Because he’s carrying Harry’s baby.

Louis’s all round now, and he waddles a bit when he walks, and he burns a furious shade of red when Harry points that out. Harry loves him. Harry tells him that everyday, just how much Harry loves him, loves him for carrying their child, loves him for letting Harry in, loves him for being so damn beautiful and perfect.

They’re not really together, though, just living together, under doctor’s orders that Louis shouldn’t be alone under his condition after the sixth month. It’s a known fact that an unmated pregnancy lends itself to more difficulty than a mated one, though neither Louis or the baby are in any real danger, they were assured.

(“You’ll probably just feel like you’ve got a mild flu for the last few months. Aches, pains, some nausea, nothing fatal,” the doctor had said, in a tone that was probably meant to comfort them.

Louis turned to Harry with a look that would’ve killed a lesser man. “You did this.”

And because Harry’s an idiot, he started with, “It takes two to tango—” And Louis had hit him on the arm. Hard.)

When Louis doesn’t answer the third time Harry calls his name, Harry goes searching for him. Harry’s place is small—two bedrooms—which really means that Louis gets Harry’s bedroom, the baby gets the nursery (that is still barely decorated), and Harry gets the couch. It’s all fine with Harry, though in his perfect world, Louis would invite him into bed together.

It doesn’t take long to find him. Louis’s in the corner of Harry’s room (though it’s beginning to smell more like the both of them, mixed together, and if that doesn’t do something to Harry), curled in some blankets, a couple of pillows, and some of Harry’s old shirts, the silk ones he splurged on that one time, before he started saving up for his baby. Their baby.

Harry swallows when his eyes land on Louis. He’s just so beautiful, is the thing, round with Harry’s baby, swollen with his seed. His cheeks are all filled out, and he’s radiating sun and warmth everyday (I’m splotchy, Louis would say, but Harry would coo at him and the conversation would end there). His lips are open in a pout, and he’s breathing deeply, nose buried in the shirt Harry had worn last night to bed.

(If Harry had noticed his ever depleting supply of shirts, and perhaps left them around where he knew Louis would find them, where Louis wouldn’t be embarrassed of having to take them, of his nest, even though Harry’s said so many goddamn times that it’s okay, then, well, that’s Harry’s business).

All of a sudden, Louis lets out a gasp, pink lips parted as he tenses around the swell of his belly. Harry nearly trips over his feet to sit at the edge of Louis’s nest, never going inside. He reaches out, slowly, to rub circles on Louis’s shoulder. Louis’s adamant about Harry not touching his belly, and it makes Harry near feral with want, wanting to hold his child, hold Louis, see their baby they made together, feeling it kick when it hears its daddy.

Louis whines as he wakes. He blinks and shakes his head when he finds Harry’s form. “Go away,” he says, and it might’ve sounded mean, if not for Louis’s half-asleep voice, all raspy and soft. It only makes Harry’s heart grow fonder.

“I’m not going anywhere,” Harry says. “Are you—is it hurting?”

“Barely,” Louis murmurs, but in the same breath, he whines and grabs at his swollen belly, wearing nothing but Harry’s sweater.

“Lou, baby, c’mon,” Harry says, offering his hands. Louis groans as Harry helps him up, hand landing on the side of his stomach; Harry leads them to the bed, one hand on his shoulder, another on his back.

“Your kid is playing football with my internal organs. Gonna be a proper footie star, he is.” Louis attempts a joke, but it all gets lost in the soft groan he lets out as Harry helps him down on the bed.

“She,” Harry says, rolling his eyes. This again.

“Who is carrying it?”

“Who donated the sperm to determine the gender?”

Louis raises an eyebrow, but he’s so out of it, it barely lifts. “So you chose each individual little swimmer as you shot your load and knotted my arse? Fantastic.”

“As we made love, yes, I did,” Harry says, shucking off his shirt. He gets under the covers with Louis and opens his arms.

Another part of doctor’s orders—to alleviate Louis’s apparently flu-like symptoms, Harry’s got to scent him. To create some sense of bond for the baby, according to the doctor. Harry’s not complaining, not when he gets an armful of his soft omega nearly everyday, warm and all full with him, with Harry, with his baby.

“I hate this,” Louis whispers, nearly dozing off as Harry rubs his nose along his mating mark, licking up the place they would’ve bonded.

“I know, baby. I’m sorry.” He’s not. He’s really, really not. Harry swallows and takes a deep breath of Louis, his hot skin. “But I’m so in awe of you, of how amazing you are—”

Louis snorts. “Shut up. I look like a whale.”

“You’re carrying our baby, Lou,” Harry whispers, and he didn’t know when his breath got so unsteady, like it could give out at any moment. “And I know it sucks for you, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, but baby, you’re amazing. You look so beautiful, and everyday I love you more, and I didn’t even think that was possible. You’re doing this for us, for our child, and God, this is awful, but everytime I see you and your belly, I think of how good you look, how everyone knows you're up the duff with my child, how you were made for this, made to carry my baby.”

Louis looks up at him with wide, unblinking eyes.

“I know I fucked everything up, Lou, but we’re having a baby, and I love you both so much,” Harry says, and he’s got tears welling up in his eyes, falling down his face. He hides his head in Louis’s neck, licking up the feverish skin.

Louis’s fingers find his own, and they lead to his swollen belly; he rests Harry’s hands there, and his eyes flutter shut.

“Don’t say anything, Harry,” Louis whispers, eyelashes long on his glowing skin, lips pink, face flushed. Harry would do anything to kiss him. “Please don’t. Just let me sleep.”

Harry stays up for hours more, feeling their baby kick underneath his hands. Eventually, his eyes shut. His heart won’t stop pounding against his ribs.
