I'm doing a sun study today! It's that day or two when I race around the house like mad to get approximate percentages of how much sun is covering a particular area that I want to plant in every hour, to estimate how much sun each area is getting. Since it's pretty shady up here this tells me a lot about where I can actually plant things versus where I assume I can. Then I just pop the results into Excel and make a little graph.

Sun Study Day 3:

Finally got a break in the clouds at that 4PM slot. Really interesting, even the sunniest spot in the yard is completely blocked by the surrounding trees at that point.

Day 2 of the Sun Study:

Fog and Rain. Weather says 🖕to human plans and continues to be spring in the mountains, aka completely unpredictable.

At least it had the good grace to rain *two* days after I watered everything instead of one.

Tacita Dean - The Green Ray

ARTIST RESEARCH: TACITA DEAN

I discovered this film made by Tacita Dean while looking at her large scale 2D works involving chalk board, and photography. The narration over the film gives us the thought for the feeling of the experience. Audio involvement with any visual has the power to do this and can sway our interpretation of what we see. For me, this film feels like a scientific investigation with the audio. Without it, I can imagine it would have a more meditative quality.

In my own work I hope to add audio to video pieces I am making to add context to the piece. To date, most of my video work has included distorted or muddled background noise, or even no audio at all. Noticing this has motivated me to rent some audio equipment to gather audio documentation of the landscape I am currently studying. The audio will add another ‘layer’ to the videos.

I created a curated document compiling information as well as conducting my own investigations on the ‘Zero Energy House’. This comprehensive site study will help shape certain aspects of my project.
