Having just released their digital single Circular Breathing in early January, San Francisco four-piece Sunbeam Rd. are back with the latest installment of a series of two-track singles with Basements & Passed Lives. Two singles in under a month? You have to wonder: do these guys sleep?
Passed Lives has a killer intro; fifteen seconds of gurgling and general noise, dissonance soon dissolves as the songs structure slowly emerges. Instruments entering the equation one by one with the definite psych rock qualities I’ve come to expect from them. I tried to come up with a more “eloquent” way to say this but.. the track is badass. It’s vast, spacey, but not to the point where its organization is sacrificed for chaos. It’s an excellent listen.
Basements (listen over at See The Leaves) is similar to the last Sunbeam Rd. song I posted here (Circular Breathing), it’s got a great dreamy feel, slightly more upbeat and lacking in the gloomy overtones Circular Breathing has. That’s not a bad thing, this is just as good. With wonderful melody, soothing vocal work, and an outro worthy of a lullaby.. this is clearly some of their best work.
