Bombón - Oh Baby •

I heard this band quite a while ago, I'm talking years here, but for whatever reason never posted about them when the site was in it's "heyday" (read: when I wasn't lazy and updated daily) ---- anyway, I saw Bombon last year, maybe at Ham and Eggs or Redwood Bar, unfortunately I can't remember WHERE exactly but I do remember they totally ruled! 

You ever wake up on a Sunday morning and ask yourself "what ever happened to such-and-such band?" Well this is what happened to me yesterday with Bombón. Fast foward to today where I am posting "Oh Baby." Looks like these ladies play live often, so I'm hoping to make the drive out to Long Beach/San Pedro soon to catch a set. 

Not a new song by any means, but just to give you a little taste on how much fun they sound. Make them your go-to for power packed pop punk/rock n' roll/surf rock band and you can thank me later. Crossing my fingers for some new material to pop up on their Bandcamp.

Blood Sister - Not a Resident •

In my internet-slumber, CA/NY merger band Blood Sister came about. I say "merger" because the band is made out of members of Ganglians (which I like and have posted previously) and Night Manager (which I like and have also posted previously.) -- Neck deep in guitar and effects I haven't the knowledge to name. It's loud and catchy pop and I'm into it. Hopefully an L.A. stop is in the works.

Habibi - Siin •

I've finally been able to sit down and give Habibi’s self titled release a proper listen. The last song I posted on the site was Let Me In, and if we’re being honest it’s where I started listening to the album. I have a horrible tendency to start from the familiar.

Their strengths lie in quick songs with seemingly simple ear worm hooks, i.e.,Let Me In, Sweetest Talk. Then there’s Detroit Baby and I Got the Moves which both have the tenacity to be the choice sock hop anthems. Far From Right, Gone Like Yesterday and Sunsets took some warming up to and failed to grab me at first; the slow tempo of Sunsets has lingered with me for some time and I remain undecided. Though I figure that the songs which I still question will be the ones I will begin to enjoy in a live setting.

Siin is a total sell, vocals with a purely downtrodden demeanor I can get behind; light guitar picks and steady nonabrasive percussion make for a eerily pleasant listen — The lyrics make me feel as if I shouldn't enjoy the song, but I am willing to take the risk of committing a negative.

And of course Tomboy; this is probably my favorite song off the album. As I’ve said before, I had heard a rough demo way back when; this cleaner version has everything Habibi are good at: an energy that fluctuates at all the right moments, repeated hooks and harmonies that can easily be sung along to. I’m compelled to say that if Dick Dale and the Mo-Dettes had met half-way, you’d get the rock and roll badasses that are Habibi.

While I can see why some people feel the album is too short (read: randoms I talk to at shows), I feel differently. It’s long enough to show range, and maybe a glimpse into how the band will grow in future releases, and short enough that I remember most songs and can recall the favorites. Definitely recommend.

Is anyone else freaking the fuck out over These New Puritans hitting the road with new material? They're only stopping by a few cities in the U.S., four to be exact: New York, Evanston, Chicago, and L.A.---You better believe I already have those tickets to their Roxy gig. I can't help feeling a little disappointed they are playing The Roxy.. considering I have seen TNP's live setup, how is that going to even fit on that tiny stage? Will they sacrifice their usual ensemble setup due to space? And more importantly, will they play Elvis, Swords of Truth or anything off of Beat Pyramid or Hidden? You better believe I am stoked.

Klaxons - There Is No Other Time •

2014 is turning out to be the year the bands we all loved in 2007 come back full energy. While I loved Klaxons back when I was post-Brit Pop obsessed, it's taken seven years but I've finally come to accept the reality that I need to give up on my past musical obsessions in order to grow with the present. 

Things just got real introspective, and kind of ridiculous. Sorry, I just have a lot of feelings for the musical likes of my 2007 self. 

"There Is No Other Way" is the first song I've heard from Klaxons in ages. Do I like it? I like it for feelings previously mentioned, but I know if this song were to play, and I were on a dance floor..things would get so real, so quick. This is the kind of song Honeycut should play every night.

At the same time, it’s hard for me to refrain from mentioning Myths of the Near Future — because how much did that album rule? SO MUCH. This song has almost nothing of those ‘drug-fueled warehouse parties in the middle of nowhere' vibes Myths gave.

I’m just making this shit complicated: this song is fun. It doesn't necessarily mean their upcoming full-length due out this summer will be 10-or-so tracks of the same sound, it could very well have some remnants of Myth’s or be a completely brand new kind of awesome. I’ll have to force myself to be patient and avoid jumping the gun by blackballing their new album.

Habibi - Let Me In

I haven't listened to New York's Habibi in, maybe a year when the rough cuts of Tomboy were floating around, but am totally into this song. Let Me In is off Habibi's debut album out now on Burger Records. Like most of Burger Records' roster: they're a fun listen. It's that catchy rock that you sing a long to pretty easily, and probably leave on repeat until you get sick of it (hopefully you don't.) I missed them play during Echo Park rising last year, but hopefully they'll swing by our parts soon enough. Thumbs up on the album, Habibi!

September Girls - Ships

Cursing The Sea is the first time I've had the pleasure of listening to Dublin's September Girls.  I don't mean to throw a bunch of recycled adjectives your way when describing September Girls but sometimes you can't really escape them (and unfortunately I sometimes don't have the brain capacity to think beyond them): The album is a product laden with reverb and quite lo-fi that might strike some as a live production. Not to say that's a bad thing about these twelve songs; whether by choice or necessity, the less-than crystal production works well. Ships, Left Behind, Sister and the title track are prime examples and coincidentally my favorites. Definitely recommend checking out the album.

The good news for us in the States: they'll be at SXSW. And if Cursing The Sea is any indication of their live sound, and I think it is, they'll put on a good show. Here's to a Los Angeles show before or after Austin.

What better way to break the silence here than to recommend a sweet show going on tonight with our favorite L.A. band, Cold Showers. Also worth noting is headliner TOY!

If you’re like me and read the NME religiously throughout high school, you’ll remember Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong. But let’s keep that name in the darkest corner of our memory bank and let’s not mention it in connection with TOY again—-I only bring it up for nostalgia’s sake. The members who ended up as TOY made themselves into pretty sweet band and should be treated standalone post-introduction. TOY are pushing their latest, Join the Dots, released last month through Heavenly. If you haven’t had the pleasure of checking out their self-titled release, I definitely recommend checking it out as well.

Stoked for this one. See you there, Los Angeles.

Cold Showers - Double Life • [MP3] 

Art Fag, home to the likes of Plateaus, Bleached and Heavy Hawaii among many other great bands, released local act Cold Showers' new single yesterday and boy is it a good listen.

We've heard the alternate take of "So I Can Grow," but this 'real' version packs a fast paced punch. Their solemn cover of The Cars' "Double Life" is far from shabby; it doesn't forsake the original and adds enough of the band where the track can stand alone without any comparison to the original being necessary (and check out the backing vocals courtesy of Katy Goodman.)

I've only been telling you how great this band is for the last year and if you've failed to realize that after all this time.. that's on you.

Los Angeles: Catch Cold Showers at the Dilettante on the 5th of July! I'll see ya there.

Thee Oh Sees- Lupine Dominus • [MP3] 

Oh man, oh man. The best way to start this Tuesday is with this new number from Thee Oh Sees. At this point I've long since lost count of their discography numbers; Pitchfork claims this is their 14th album, but who really knows?

Of course, another Oh Sees LP is on the way in the form of Putrifiers II which is out Sept. 11 on In The Red.

LA: cop those tickets to see them at the El Rey with Sic Alps on 9/9! I'll see ya there.

Sic Alps - Glyphs • [MP3]

San Francisco's psych rock act Sic Alps are prepping their fifth album due out September 11th on Drag City. 

Never understood why Sic Alps don't seem to get as much internet love as their weird-rock brethren such as Tim Presley, Fresh & Onlys, Ty Segall (who is occasionally involved in Sic Alps), etc. This song is so good it got me to sit at my computer and update the site.

Los Angeles: Y'all might enjoy their September 9th gig where they hit up the El Rey with Thee Oh Sees--now there's a show. You get to flail around to good weird rock in the El Rey's velvety decor?! Will not miss this one.

The Everywheres - Someone Disappeared • [MP3] 

Been meaning to throw this one your way for some time. Samuel, from Halifax band Spooky Campers, has branched off with a new solo project, The Everywheres. Nice groove all around; definitely for fans of the Allah-Las.

Sunbeam Rd. - Pro Wave Rider •

One of my favorite acts out of NorCal need your help to get their LP pressed!

Sunbeam Rd.'s psych-folk-pop-fuzz rock is a good time and I'm positive this album that's in the works will be a good listen as well. I mean this cut, Pro Wave Rider is good so why wouldn't the rest be?

Give this new song a listen and hopefully it entices you to drop some cash on these radical dudes. And if that doesn't do it for you, you might want their cool kitty drum head.

Deep Time - Clouds • [MP3] 

Loving this one. Once playing under the name YellowFever, Austin's Deep Time makes some weird brand of pop that I'm definitely into. Real glad I happened upon this song; Moore's got some particular pipes on her. And I'm not too surprised that their new album will be out on the ever-lovely Hardly Art (a choice purveyor for all weird-fun-pop jams.)
