The wine: Domaine Begude Pinot Rosé, 2015, Pays d’Oc
The details: 12% abv, screwcap, around £8, organic
Date of pairing: Monday 19th June 2017
In my garden, the mercury hit 30℃: it’s Rosé weather. I usually don’t drink a lot of the pink stuff but days like these were made for wines like Domaine Begude’s Pinot Rosé. Enticingly salmon-orange in the glass, you know it’s going to be refreshingly dry but quite a deep colour hints a good flavour intensity. From 100% Pinot Noir, unsurprisingly, the nose gives aromas of all the usual red fruits: strawberry, cranberry, redcurrant but it really goes deeper than that with a ripe stone fruit character too. Becoming more apparent as you taste the wine, crisp green apple shines out among blossom and strawberries and cream - reminiscent of the famous Chardonnays from the same region, Limoux, this wine has that similar creamy mouthfeel.
I’ve had to crack out the big guns with this one. I’m not sure if it’s the weather or the wine but Begude’s Rosé is crying out for summery tunes to go with it. The big gun for this wine is Dario G’s Sunchyme. Richly textured but refreshingly easy to listen to, it’s impossible to not feel cheerful and in the mood for some sun when listening to this burst of summer vibrancy. Sipping Domaine Begude’s Pinot Rosé along with it, in the garden or on the beach, really makes the experience.
