OJT EATS | Sunday in Brooklyn Marylebone

We'd previously been to the Sunday in Brooklyn in Notting Hill but to be honest, it was a bit of a hassle to get to. Luckily, they have since opened one in Marylebone which is much more convenient for us. We enjoyed ourselves enough the last time around that we were happy enough to go get ourselves an early lunch there the last time we were feeling a bit peckish and in the area.

This was the crispy chicken sandwich. The chicken was fried well and came with sweet and sour hot honey, a cabbage slaw and kewpie with a side of seaweed dusted fries and a pickle spear. The pickle was relatively mild, we could've done with it being a little bit sharper but the fries were above average. The seaweed dusting didn't really make much difference but they were crispy were well salted. It was a good plate and a very pleasant lunch.

This was the cheddar scramble which as the photo shows, was some very fluffy scrambled eggs, some home fries and toast. There was a good amount of cheesiness to the eggs which was nice. The toast was nice but could've done with a lick of butter. This was nice enough but to be honest, we think there are better eggs on toast dishes out there (the poached eggs on toast at WatchHouse comes to mind).

Even without having the pancakes this time, this was a great little lunch. It's tucked right around the corner from Selfridges and a perfect place for a break from window shopping (or actual shopping) and grab a quick and tasty bite.

Recently, the NY import Sunday in Brooklyn has opened a 2nd branch in London, this time in Marylebone, just round the corner from Selfridges. From the looks of things, it can get pretty busy but we managed to make it down pretty early one weekend and decided to have some brunch.

The big draw of this place are their massive pancakes which we'll come to later. First though, a little bit of savoury food and in this case, this was the egg sandwich with an extra sausage patty. As breakfast sandwiches go, this was pretty impressive. The eggs were fluffy, the sausage patty was pretty juicy and the bun was soft.

This was the Autumn Harvest Bowl and was clearly our healthy option. Saying that though, it was also simple yet very tasty. THere was bulgar wheat, squash, pomegranate, baby beets and a perfectly cooked egg all with a slightly tangy dressing.

Finally onto the signature dish, the pancakes. They are pretty huge and thick and you can get them as singles or in piles of 2 or 3. We're not actually sure if this is just a brunch item or if you can get them all day long but it's hard to argue that they don't look great. They are smothered with hazelnut maple praline and has a small slab of brown butter on top. As for taste, we have to admit there was probably a bit too much of the praline as it was pretty sweet. The pancake itself was actually good and the praline is very nice (in slightly smaller quantities than is given).

All in all, this was an excellent brunch but slightly surprisingly, the pancake was not the star of the show. It was pretty even all around with the sandwich and harvest bowl holding their own. For us, the pancake crown still belongs to Bill Grainger & Co but Sunday at Brooklyn comes pretty close.

Sunday in Brooklyn Not the wildly popular one in Williamsburg that people wait 3 hours to squeeze into and devour the cakiest of pancakes (yet, maybe I’ll host such an experience someday), but just my home on a Sunday, making the @nytcooking buttermilk pancakes recipe, jamming to the @encantomovie soundtrack and sending voice messages back and forth with a great friend— another writer. She’s the kind of person who is like a really flattering mirror. I see all the best sides of myself with her. She and I were talking about feeling fraudulent. I was having a day yesterday with the side of myself that won’t shut up about measurement. The side of myself that wants metrics and data, my own personal “success auditor”, demanding ROIs and KPIs, making all sorts of projections based on age and resume credit… I felt a strong sense of “I should be further along” and like an absolute joke for wanting the things I want. After telling my friend about it this morning she says “feeling like a fraud is a great sign that you’re actually doing it.” And I thought back on my most recent newsletter, a love letter to rejection. And it occurred to me that rejection and imposter syndrome are actually just advanced versions of inspiration. It’s not immediately obvious how to use either of them, but they’re around for a purpose, just the same as any other stroke of inspiration. I obviously prefer the easy kind that has me giddily scratching away at my journal instead of the tougher kind that suggests I quit. But both ultimately do the same thing— they stir my need to talk about thoughts that all get poured into the same bowl eventually. Sometimes sweet, sometimes salty, but ingredients just the same for something delicious… or an utter atrocity that I’d never serve to anyone. But if it’s fun to make then who cares right? There will always be a ravenous “Joey” around who eats everything and doesn’t really care about the artistry of it.
