You still weren’t entirely sure how Sungchan had found you.
Actually, that wasn’t true. You knew how he’d found you. You just didn’t understand why he’d tried so hard.
You’d been sitting in the auditorium during your college’s welcome assembly, already regretting ever joining the club that had volunteered you to give a presentation.
You hated public speaking. You hated being looked at. And you especially hated the feeling of standing under bright stage lights while hundreds of people stared at you like you were supposed to know exactly what you were doing.
So you’d done what you always did when you were nervous. You’d kept your head down, spoken quietly, and gotten through it as quickly as possible.
You hadn’t noticed the tall boy sitting several rows back. Sungchan had noticed you though. He’d noticed you before you’d even started speaking. Apparently, he’d spent the entire presentation watching you.
And then, because Sungchan had always been a little too confident in his ability to get what he wanted, he’d decided he wanted to know you.
He asked around. He found out your name. He asked someone who knew someone who happened to have one of your classes. And eventually, he’d found your Instagram. Your very carefully organized Instagram.
Your profile picture was soft and pretty. Your feed was almost entirely pastel colors. Your highlights were arranged neatly, with one dedicated entirely to your music. You’d spent hours making that page look the way it did. Sungchan had apparently spent even longer looking through it.
His first message had been simple.
sungchan: hey
You’d stared at it for a good five minutes. You knew who he was. Everyone did.
Sungchan was the type of person who seemed to know everyone. He was always going to parties, always surrounded by people, always with Wonbin or Shotaro or both. He had the reputation of being the stereotypical college party boy, which had initially made you wonder why someone like him was messaging you.
You were quiet. You liked staying home. You made music by yourself. Your idea of a good Friday night was sitting cross-legged on your bedroom floor with your laptop open and your headphones on. Sungchan’s idea of a good Friday night seemed to involve somebody yelling his name from across a crowded house.
You’d replied anyway.
you: hi
And apparently, that was all the encouragement he’d needed. He kept talking to you. For weeks. You were almost impressed by his persistence. You’d give him one-word answers, and somehow he’d find another question. You’d take hours to respond, and he’d still message you later.
He’d ask about your music. He’d remember the answers. He’d ask what you were working on and then check back days later to see if you’d finished it. Eventually, you started looking forward to his messages. Then you agreed to a date.
You’d told NingNing it was just one.
“Just one,” you’d repeated while she stared at you.
“Right.”
“Don’t look at me like that.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“Your face did.”
Ningning had laughed.
That one date became another. Then another. And somewhere between Sungchan picking you up for dinner and sitting in your room listening to unfinished songs while you nervously explained your production choices, you realized you actually liked him. A lot.
It wasn’t long before the two of you were official. And shortly after that, your Instagram had a new highlight. Right beside your music.
boyfriend <3
Ningning had made fun of you for it for approximately three days. You’d denied caring. You cared. A lot.
And now, several months into your relationship, you were sitting on the couch at one of Sungchan’s friend’s parties while he played cards across the room. Which was still slightly surreal. You didn’t really do parties. You’d never really done parties, actually.
But you’d started doing a lot of things since meeting Sungchan. You’d gone to football games. You’d gone out with his friends. You’d learned which restaurants he liked. You’d learned that Wonbin became unbearably competitive over card games. You’d learned that Shotaro somehow always ended up being the voice of reason. And, perhaps most surprisingly, you’d gotten to know their girlfriends.
They were sitting around you now, talking over one another. One of them was telling you a story about something that had happened at a party the previous weekend, and you were laughing so hard that you had to put your drink down.
“I swear, he just stood there,” she said, staring at you incredulously. “Like he didn’t know what he was doing.”
“Maybe he didn’t,” you said.
She gasped. You immediately covered your mouth.
“Oh my God.”
“You’re funny!” she accused.
You laughed.
“I’m not.”
“You are. You just don’t talk.”
That made you laugh harder.
“I talk.”
“Not at parties.”
You glanced across the room. Sungchan was still playing cards.
“I’m talking right now.”
“Because you’re drunk.”
“I’m not drunk.”
The girls looked at you. You frowned.
“I’m not.”
“Sure.”
You were about to defend yourself when you felt a familiar hand briefly touch your shoulder. You looked up. Sungchan. He’d apparently gotten up from the game at some point without you noticing. He leaned down, his face close enough that you could hear him over the music.
“Hey.”
“Hi.”
His eyes flicked down to your drink.
“You good?”
You nodded. He glanced at the girls.
“She’s good?”
One of them immediately nodded.
“She likes us more than you.”
Sungchan’s eyebrows lifted.
“That’s impossible.”
You smiled.
“She might be right.”
He looked offended.
“Wow.”
You laughed. He leaned down and pressed a quick kiss against your forehead.
“I’m going back.”
“Okay.”
“Text me if you need anything.”
“I will.”
His hand slid briefly to your waist before he disappeared back toward the card table.
One of the girls waited until he was gone. Then she looked at you. You knew that look.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Don’t.”
“He’s so obsessed with you.”
“He is not.”
Both girls stared at you. You frowned.
“What?”
“Girl.”
You looked toward Sungchan. He was already back at the table. His attention was on the cards. Or at least, it was supposed to be. Because the second you looked over, his eyes met yours. You smiled. He smiled back. Then Wonbin apparently said something because Sungchan turned his attention back to the game.
You looked down at your drink.
“He’s just nice.”
“Sure.”
“He checks on me.”
“Every five minutes.”
“He doesn’t.”
“He literally just did.”
You took another sip.
“Maybe, but I’m his girlfriend. He’s supposed to.”
The girl smiled.
“Exactly.”
You rolled your eyes.
You were trying to focus on their conversation again 30 minutes later when your phone buzzed. You pulled it from your lap.
sungchan: u okay?
You stared at the message. Then looked at him. He was still playing cards. You typed back.
you: yes
Three dots appeared.
sungchan: having fun?
you: yes
sungchan: good
You smiled despite yourself.
you: are you?
His response came almost immediately.
sungchan: would be more fun if u sat here
You looked across the room. He was looking directly at you now. You raised your eyebrows.
you: then come sit with me
His response:
sungchan: can’t
you: why
sungchan: winning
You laughed.
you: okay liar
The message was barely sent before Sungchan looked at you with the most offended expression you’d ever seen. You immediately started laughing. He pointed at you from across the room. You mouthed, sorry. He shook his head. Then he turned back toward the game. You were still smiling when one of the girls nudged your knee.
“You’re cute.”
You looked at her.
“What?”
“You two.”
Your smile softened.
“Oh.”
It was strange sometimes. How naturally he’d fit himself into your life. There was a time when you would’ve gone home instead of coming here. A time when you would’ve spent your entire night alone, headphones on, working on a song. You still did that. Sungchan had never asked you to stop. If anything, he was one of the people who encouraged it the most.
He’d sit on your bedroom floor while you worked. He’d ask what every little button did. He’d listen to unfinished songs that you weren’t even sure you liked yet. Sometimes he’d say things that made absolutely no sense.
“Why does it sound sad?”
“It’s not sad.”
“It sounds sad.”
“It’s R&B.”
“Same thing.”
You’d throw a pillow at him.
He’d laugh.
And somehow, this loud, outgoing, social person had become the one person you wanted around when you were doing the quiet things you loved.
You were thinking about that when you heard your name. You looked over. Sungchan had gotten up again. He was walking toward the kitchen. His eyes met yours. You expected him to come over. Instead, he simply pointed toward your empty cup. You looked down. Then back at him. He mouthed, drink? You nodded. He gave you a thumbs-up and disappeared. You smiled to yourself.
“He does that all the time,” you said.
The girl beside you looked amused.
“Does what?”
“Checks on me without actually checking on me.”
She laughed.
“That’s because he doesn’t want to look clingy.”
You looked at her.
“He’s not clingy.”
“No, but he’s definitely clingy with you.”
You couldn’t help smiling. A few minutes later, Sungchan returned with a fresh drink. Instead of handing it to you, he held it just out of reach. You looked at him.
“What?”
“Say please.”
You stared.
“Sungchan.”
“Please?”
He smiled. You reached for it. He moved it away. You narrowed your eyes.
“Give it to me.”
“That’s not please.”
“You’re annoying.”
“And?”
“Please.”
He immediately handed it over.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
He leaned down and kissed your forehead again. Then, without another word, he returned to his game. The girls watched him go. You could feel them looking at you. You refused to acknowledge it.
“Don’t.”
“We didn’t say anything.”
“Your faces did.”
They laughed. And the night continued. Sungchan came back once because he’d apparently lost a round and needed “moral support.” You told him that was unfortunate. He told you to stop being mean to him. You told him you weren’t. He kissed your cheek and went back to the table.
Later, he passed behind the couch and let his fingers skim over your shoulder. Then he sent you another text.
sungchan: i miss you pretty
You looked up. He wasn’t looking at you. You smiled at your phone.
you: you’re literally ten feet away
sungchan: doesn’t mean I can’t miss u
You shook your head.
you: baby
sungchan: ur a baby
You stared at that one for a second longer than necessary. Then you locked your phone. You didn’t reply. You didn’t need to. Across the room, Sungchan looked at you. You smiled. He smiled back. That was enough.
Another 30 minutes later, though, you found yourself getting up. It wasn’t because you were tired. It wasn’t because you wanted to go home. You were actually having fun. You just… missed him. Which was ridiculous. He wasn’t even that far away. But you’d spent the last two hours watching him from across the room, and suddenly you wanted to be beside him again.
So you walked over. Sungchan noticed you immediately. His head turned slightly, and the second he realized you were coming toward him, his arm lifted. You stepped into his space.
His arm wrapped around your waist without hesitation, pulling you comfortably against his side. He barely glanced away from you as his friends continued talking.
“What’s up, mama?”
You shook your head.
“Nothing.”
“You okay?”
“Yeah.”
“Having fun?”
You nodded. His hand moved slowly along your waist.
“Ready to leave?”
You shook your head. That made him pause. His eyes moved over your face.
“Are you sure?”
You nodded.
“I’m okay.”
He watched you for another second. You smiled.
“Really.”
“Okay.”
He seemed satisfied. Then he leaned down and pressed a soft kiss against your arm. You looked at him. He was already turning back toward the game. Then he patted his thigh. You blinked.
“What?”
“Come here.”
“Sungchan.”
“Come on.”
“Why?”
He looked at you like the answer should’ve been obvious.
“Good luck charm.”
You laughed.
“You’re already winning.”
“Exactly.”
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“Sit down.”
You rolled your eyes. But you did. You settled onto his lap, one arm loosely around his shoulders while his hand rested against your waist. The conversation around the table continued. Wonbin looked at you.
“Did he seriously make you sit there?”
Sungchan answered without looking up.
“She’s my good luck charm.”
“You’re so annoying.”
“Yet I’m winning.”
Shotaro laughed. You smiled and rested your chin lightly against Sungchan’s shoulder. He glanced up at you.
“Comfortable?”
“Mhm.”
“Good.”
Then he returned to the cards. You watched for a while. You weren’t particularly interested in the game. You were more interested in Sungchan. His little expressions. The way he rubbed his thumb over the side of your waist absentmindedly. The way he’d occasionally lean his head against yours for a second before sitting straight again. The way he smiled when he knew he’d played the right card. Eventually, Wonbin groaned. Sungchan’s smile widened.
“No way.”
“Way.”
“Bro.”
Sungchan laughed. You couldn’t stop yourself from smiling. He looked so happy. And you suddenly felt that familiar feeling in your chest. Warm. Full. Almost too much. You loved him. It hit you so suddenly that you almost laughed. Because this wasn’t the life you’d imagined for yourself.
You’d always thought you’d be happiest alone. In your room. Making music. You’d never been the girl who dreamed about having a boyfriend. You’d never been particularly interested in dating. And then Sungchan had walked into your life and somehow made you realize that maybe being loved didn’t have to mean giving up the quiet parts of yourself.
He loved the quiet parts. He loved watching you work. He loved your music. He loved when you got shy. He loved when you finally opened up enough to tease him. He loved you. And sometimes you still couldn’t believe it.
Sungchan suddenly looks down at you. His smile faded slightly.
“What?”
You blinked.
“What?”
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Like what?”
“Like you’re about to cry.”
You immediately frowned.
“I’m not.”
He studied you. Then his expression softened.
“You okay?”
You nodded.
“Yeah.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
He kissed your temple.
“Okay.”
Then he turned back to the game. You smiled against his shoulder. A few minutes later, he won. Again. Sungchan immediately leaned back with a triumphant smile.
“You see?”
You laughed.
“Congratulations.”
“Thank you.”
“You’re so proud of yourself.”
“Because I’m good.”
“You got lucky.”
His head snapped toward you.
“Excuse me?”
You smiled innocently.
“You heard me.”
“After I just won?”
“You got lucky.”
He stared at you. Then he leaned closer.
“You’re supposed to be on my side.”
“I am.”
“Then tell me I did good.”
You laughed.
“You did good.”
“Again.”
“Sungchan.”
“Say it.”
“You did good, baby.”
“Thank you.”
He kissed your cheek. You rolled your eyes. His friends immediately started complaining about his favoritism.
“Shut up,” Sungchan said.
You laughed. He looked entirely too pleased with himself. Eventually, he tapped out of the game. Wonbin immediately protested. Sungchan shook his head.
“Nope.”
“You’re scared.”
“I’m not scared.”
“Then play.”
Sungchan stood, helping you up with him.
“I have to get her home.”
You frowned.
“What?”
Sungchan looked down at you.
“I’m taking you home.”
“But—”
“No.”
“I didn’t even say anything.”
“You were about to.”
You stared at him. He smiled.
“We’re leaving.”
You glanced toward the table. Then at him.
“I’m fine.”
“I know.”
“Then why are we leaving?”
He grabbed your jacket from the back of the couch.
“Because I’m taking you home.”
You crossed your arms.
“Sungchan.”
“Baby.”
“I don’t want to leave yet.”
He paused. For half a second, you thought you’d won. Then he handed you your jacket.
“Too bad.”
You stared at him.
He stared back.
“Come on.”
“You’re annoying.”
“You love me.”
You hated how easily that made you smile.
“Unfortunately.”
“Yeah, yeah.”
He helped you into your jacket anyway. Then he said goodbye to everyone, promising Wonbin he’d finish their game another night.
You said goodbye to the girls, who immediately made you promise to come to the next party even if Sungchan wasn’t there. You laughed.
“Okay.”
Sungchan overheard.
“Absolutely not.”
You looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because then I’ll have to worry about you.”
You stared.
“I’m literally an adult.”
“I know.”
“I can take care of myself.”
“I know.”
“Then?”
He opened the front door.
“Still don’t like it.”
You laughed. Outside, the cool air felt good against your warm face. Sungchan walked beside you, his hand settling naturally at the small of your back.
When you reached the car, he opened your door. You looked at him.
“You’re being weird.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“How?”
“You’re doing the gentleman thing.”
“I always do the gentleman thing.”
You stared at him.
“Don’t.”
He laughed. You climbed inside. Sungchan closed your door, walked around the car, and got into the driver’s seat. For a moment, neither of you said anything. Then you looked over.
“You really didn’t have to take me home.”
He started the car.
“I know.”
“I was fine.”
“I know.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because I know you’re fine.”
You frowned.
“Then why?”
He glanced over at you. His eyes lingered on your body for a second. Then he smiled. You immediately became suspicious.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Sungchan.”
He pulled out of the driveway. You watched him.
“Why did you actually want to leave?”
He laughed.
“Nothing.”
“Tell me.”
“It’s embarrassing.”
That caught your attention. You turned toward him.
“What?”
He shook his head.
“Nothing.”
“Sungchan.”
He sighed. Then he reached over and placed his hand on your thigh.
“I wanted to get you home quickly.”
You waited.
“Why?”
His thumb brushed over your knuckles. He looked at you for a second. And smiled.
“Because I like you in that dress.”
You stared at him.
“What does that even mean?“
“I’m kinda horny.”
You blinked.
“Sungchan, you made me leave a party because I made you randomly horny?”
He shrugged.
“Very horny.”
You sigh with a smile, hiding your face with your hands. He immediately smiled too.
“Don’t be embarrassed.”
“You’re insatiable.”
“You’re just hot.”
“That doesn’t make any sense.”
“It does to me.”
You lowered your hands. He was still smiling. You couldn’t help smiling back. And as he drove you home, your hand stayed in his.
