Hey there, welcome to my cave lion comic!

“Life—uh—finds a way”. It sure does.

The Cenozoic of a few thousand years ago is one of the most amazing things you’ll ever see, one of my favorite animals within it being the Cave Lion (specifically the American cave lion, Panthera Atrox) so here’s a loosely-ClanGen -based comic about a pride of cave lions!

Sunlit Steppe is inspired by @mammoth-clangen but independent from that amazing comic I’m definitely not recommending right now but go read it, it’s so good!

Sunlit Steppe updates every weekend. Biweekly, at the most. Pages posted as made on ComicFury, posted by the moon here on tumblr.

Waterbuck and Blackbuck = sisters?

Got a question on DA asking if Waterbuck and Blackbuck are related.

Sable and Waterbuck are definitely biologically related (Oryx is an adopted brother because they were all found by Blackbuck when she was on patrol) but as for Blackbuck being related to them…

It’ll have to be something explored later in the comic :)

Expressions within Sunlit Steppe

Since they’re cave lions, they have their own phrases/words for things, and I’m proud of them so here you are:

MEASUREMENTS

Winter - a year. The winter is a key point of time in cave lion beliefs, so it measures their years. A year revolves around one point in time, so after a winter is their new year, announcing the beginning/end of a year.

Season - around 4 months, respectively. If a lion were 2 seasons old, they’d be 8 moons.

Moon - equivalent of a month. The moon is also crucial to lions beliefs, so it’s fitting it is used in a time measurement.

First sunlight - dawn or sunrise.

Sun-sink - dusk or sunset.

ANIMALS

Broad-shoulders - bears, specifically Arctodus, the short-faced bear. 

Chasers - the extinct American cheetah, miracinonyx, also called runners.

Rippers - dire wolves, also called Hound-teeth or Dog-teeth.

Bone-teeth - pachycrocuta, a prehistoric hyena-like carnivore, also called bone-crushers and cutters.

Little-teeth - little saber-teeth cattens, genuses like that of homotherin machairodontine.

SAYINGS

Bigclaw - a mentor to a cub older than five moons

“Glacier’s Breath!” - used in a sense of surprise or shock to convey the emotion; an equivalent to “holy cow”.

“Have you got icicles in your ears?” - “are you listening to me?” (Can also have the expression “you pompous idiot” added to it for more of an oomph)
