Haven't posted in a while, here's a couple of my new plushies I got for Destiny!
From left to right:
• Atheon, Time's Conflux
• Crota, Son of Oryx
• Oryx, the Taken King
Yesterday me and some friends finally completed a run of Sundered Doctrine (featuring Kerrev the Erased, with eir green Strand and pronouns). During the final boss fight, there was a part of the music that reminded me of the Taken King theme (probably a leitmotif or smth), and I gotta yap about said theme now, because it’s one of my favorite pieces in the entire game.
A while ago (around 3-4 years now lol) I was messing around in Garageband, when I accidentally recreated it. This is when I found out that the Taken King theme, or at least the main melody, is in fuckin MAJOR key.
For context, up until that point I stuck to the idea that major key was for “happy” songs, and minor key was for “sad” or “angry” songs. Extremely broad and such, I know, but this is what music teachers had taught me, and I figured that if they were teaching it, they at least knew SOMETHING about what they were talking about.
Despite the fact that the Taken King theme is in major key, THERE IS NOTHING “happy” ABOUT THIS SONG. This is the theme of a guy who is so unfathomably pissed about you killing his son, that he is going against his own Sword Logic to come and kill you personally. He brought his big-ass ship that he built out of the hollowed out corpse of a massive Worm God, and he’s going to take your life, your stuff, my stuff, your dog, everything you care about, not the Awoken (he bodied them with the BFG mounted on his ship, there’s not exactly much to take). Why? Because he’s Oryx, the Taken King.
Speaking of the Awoken, he’s also gonna Take the Big Fucking Dragon that they happen to have. Yes, Take is correctly capitalized. He’s bringing new jobs to the Sol system, and while he is an equal opportunity employer, it will literally cost you your soul. Soul as in your will, not like Sol as in the Sun, although he could probably do something with that also. By the way his entire operation is basically a pyramid scheme. Why? Because he’s Oryx, the Taken King.
Oh and you’re gonna have to break into his Throne World to actually kill him. Yeah you can just shoot him, but he’ll come back. While you’re in his ~~house~~ Throne, you’ll have to fight his ~~underlings and interns~~ the Hive and the Taken, jump across his ~~gay and stupid maze~~ Tombships, kill his ~~pastor~~ Warpriest, his ~~dog~~ Ogre, his ~~kids~~ Deathsingers, and THEN you can throw hands with him. He’s like 50 feet tall btw. Why? Because he’s Oryx, the Taken King.
But he’s not done, oh no. When you kill him, he’ll start drifting out into the void of space. Then like 8 years later some of his sister’s lackeys are gonna find his body on the ocean floor of Titan, and are gonna try and resurrect him. It’s not gonna work, of course, but not because you stop them; it will be implied that his worm is still active, and thus, he’s still technically alive. Braindead, but not 100% dead. Why, because he’s Oryx, the Taken King.
Surely that’s the end. Surely he can’t possibly have any continuing relevance to anything. Surely - WRONG. He’s gonna come back, sort of, as a younger version of himself as the Echo of the Navigator, and he’s gonna try and take over his old ship again. His two sisters, a ~~recently hired regional manager~~ Taken Dread Omen, and your resident Hive god of Vengeance and the physical embodiment of “fuck it we ball” Eris Morn are all gonna fight for control over said Echo. You can too, I guess, why not? Oh and you get to kill him again, but not before he argues with his sisters, names you his heir, puts you in the will, realizes his entire existence has been a lie, goes through an entire crisis of faith, copes and seethes, does a little trolling, breaks out of prison, and THEN you can fight him. On death he will drop one of the hardest one-liners of all time, which may even make you feel bad about killing him.
And why?
Because he’s ORYX. THE Taken KING. And he’s cool as FUCK. AIAT.
Had an oryx come right up my driveway. He paused there at the end of my turn about loop and looked around. Calm and in no hurry he casually wandered off, taking the time to nibble at some browse.
