aw they’re cute
Rob reposting this specific scene…
Right so Mac is sad and miserable because he’s realized that he’s been over indulging and isn’t getting any pleasure from it. And we know Mac is going to put on a straight persona in prime time because he feels as though the audience will like and identify with that version of him more. So he’s at a point where he wants to withhold pleasure because that’s where he had been most of his life, it’s familiar. He’s never satisfied with himself, whether in relation to his body or his sexuality or his religion, he’s always wanting more or wanting less. And Dennis is gonna give an emotional monologue about being themselves in prime time… guys I’m not gonna be able to handle this😭 Like seriously, Mac has been making some actual genuine progress in accepting himself but he just can’t seem to find the balance of happiness and pleasure. This is gonna wreck me
eyes eyes eyes eyes
If you think about it for too long and start looking at it in a different way, this episode really could be not a confirmation, but a rejection that anything macdennis will actually happen. Like Dennis this entire episode is genuinely pleading to the audience for them to see him as himself, not strapped to another person in a relationship that doesn’t exist. Yes of course him denying and denying that him and Mac are an item is funny, and you (me) can definitely view it as him projecting and trying not to come to terms with the fact that their relationship does toy with the line between romantic and platonic. But as he’s speaking to the audience (us) he’s being vulnerable in a way we typically don’t see him. In previous seasons he’s always putting on a mask of this perfect god-like being, that’s how he wanted to be perceived. But now he receives no thrill from it, he just wants to be himself; be able to get through something as simple as a simulated dinner and be normal. So this relates to anti macdennis because this is RCG basically bringing to attention that fact that yes their relationship is slightly questionable when it comes to what it is vs isn’t, but ultimately no matter what they write you’ll (the audience in the apartment) always assume that they’re a couple. So this gets very meta about them telling us what it really is vs what we think it is.
Did this make any sense? I’m just trying to look at this from different angles. Btw the way I view this episode isn’t totally this, I’m just trying to be realistic with what the show will actually go for. Like when I see Dennis denying, all I see is that this is building somewhere… any mention of Mac being Dennis’ boyfriend made me so excited like I legit can’t even tell you.
Idk this was a whole lotta nothing, hopefully you get what I’m trying to say (this is all coming from a macdennis lover)
EDIT: Ok I’ve slightly changed my view on one thing. During Dennis’ speech he doesn’t actually want people to see the real him, he wants them to see what he wants to be perceived as, classy, straight, and young, which are things he isn’t.
Ok this totally a meta conversation about macdennis. Because no matter what Dennis said or how much Mac said that they’re platonic, the audience still not only assumed but stated that they were a couple. Like Dennis said that he was straight but the audience still referred to Mac as his boyfriend… they mocking us🫶
Makes no logical sense that Mac could have these pictures but whatever it’s cute
