Part 2 in ‘My son, Bringer of Storms’.
You stood there silently, and he waited. He waited for an answer that could change his life. You were staring somewhere between his eyes and the floor, this was a conversation you had been afraid to have for years. It was what had kept you from coming back for so long. “I should get dressed.”
He looked at you with disbelief. That was what you had to say? “Y/N-” He tried keeping his voice calm.
“Just.. let me get dressed, Jared. Please? And maybe a drink. Or ten.”
You turned and started for your room. “Just answer me! Is he mine!?” His voice was raised, and you turned quickly.
“Please..” You begged him, and motioned to River, who stirred at the sound of a raised voice. “We’ll go-”
“We’ll talk right here. Now.”
“At least let me get River to move to his room?”
Jared sighed. “Which room is his? I’ll carry him so he doesn’t have to wake up.” You pointed it out, and Jared moved to pick up the sleeping boy. You watched as he carried him off. When Jared came back in, you were sitting on the couch, beers on the table in front of you. “Is he mine?” Your eyes were on the floor as you nodded. “Then why did you leave?” You could hear his heart break in his voice.
“I didn’t know. I had no idea when I left. I found out when I was about 9 weeks.”
“You could have come back!” His voice was getting louder again. “I would have taken you back, you know that! I loved you! I wanted this!”
“I was scared, Jared. I didn’t want this. Remember? I wasn’t ready for this. I didn’t plan to keep him. But when I heard his heartbeat.. I couldn’t end it. I thought, adoption is good too. But then he got bigger, I saw him, I felt him, and I couldn’t. I couldn’t live without him.”
“You should have come back. You should have called.. How could you not tell me I have a son? Does he know?” You shook your head. “What does he know?”
“He knows I fucked up.” You answered, starting to cry. “He knows the truth as far as he needs to. His dad wanted a family, I didn’t so I left, and then I found out.”
“Doesn’t he ask? He’s fucking 8! Has he never asked who his dad is, or to meet me?”
“He did, once.” You sniffled. “Couple years ago. At a friend’s party, he saw kids and their dads and for the first time it hit him that he didn’t have that. That maybe he was missing out on something. He asked why it was always just the two of us. Why he didn’t have a dad, or at least a step-dad. That’s when I told him I fucked it all up, I never told you, and I never got over it.” You looked up and met his eyes. “I told him I knew how to get a hold of you if I needed to. If he really wanted me to. I didn’t tell him who you were but, I told him you had moved on, you had a family. You had just had Shep. He asked if you were happy.” You sighed and wiped away tears. “I told him you were, and he said not to call. He didn’t want to ruin anything for you, he just wanted to be sure you were happy. He’s a smart and sweet kid, Jared. He gets it from you.”
Jared sat next to you with a sigh, and pulled you into a hug, letting you cry against his chest. “You should have just come back. At any time over the last 9 years, you could have come back. It might not have been how I had wanted it, but I would have been there for you both. I would have been happy to. You should have come home when you found out.” He buried his face in your hair.
“I’m sorry.” Your arms went around him. “I’m sorry I never told you. I’m sorry I left. I’m so sorry Jared..”
“Sam Winchester is my dad?” You let go of Jared and looked up. Jared turned to see River standing in the hallway. He was staring at you both.
“Looks that way.” Jared gave him a small smile.
“Oh my god, I’ve got a step mom from hell..” River’s eyes went wide. “I mean, people talk about it, but my dad married the Demon Ruby.”
“River..” You couldn’t help the smile.
He walked over and stopped in front of Jared, a smile on his face. “It’s nice to finally meet you, Sir.” He held out his hand for Jared to shake. “My name is River Stormborn, the bringer of storms, and the destroyer of wombs.” He smirked.
“River!”
“It’s nice to meet you, Dad.”
Jared chuckled. “It’s good to meet you too, Bringer of Storms.” River grinned at that as Jared shook his hand. “I’m sorry we didn’t meet sooner.”
“I think this is perfect. Except for mom crying.” He moved to wrap his arms around your neck. “Now I understand why moms always upset after we watch Supernatural. It’s not good writing and gut wrenching drama. She just missed you.”
Jared watched your face over your sons shoulder, watched how you closed your eyes with a sigh and a small smile. “You’re too damn smart for your age, you know that?” You told him.
“I am my father’s son.” He grinned before letting you go. “Can I change my last name to Winchester?!”
“You know ‘Sam’ isn’t your father, right?”
“Stop being a killjoy mom.”
After River got to spend some time with Jared while he had some soup, he got shipped right back off to bed. He didn’t complain, since he was tired, and Jared promised to visit again since he lived right upstairs when he was in Vancouver.
“You did good.” Jared smiled. “He’s a good kid. Funny.” He chuckled.
“I did my best.” You smiled softly. “Please don’t hurt him, Jared.”
He furrowed his brow. “Why would I hurt him?”
You sighed. “I know you want to be in his life, but please don’t ever make promises you can’t keep.” He opened his mouth but you cut him off. “You have a family, we’re not it. Talk to them before you decide what happens next. Please? I don’t want him to get his hopes up, only to find out your family hates the very idea of him.”
“Gen wouldn’t-”
“I don’t know her, I don’t know that for sure. What I know is I need to protect him. I know this is all my fault, I’ve never been so sorry for anything in my life. Please, Jared.”
He nodded. “No promises it is. Can I come down and visit? Spend time with him when I’m here?”
“Of course.”
“Thank you.” He smiled before kissing your cheek. When he pulled away, your eyes met, and you both sat in silence for a moment. “I uh, I should go.” He motioned before getting up “I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“Yeah. Bye Jared.”
He gave you a small awkward wave before letting himself out. He stopped with his back against the door once he was in the hall. “How will I tell Gen?” He groaned.
