The Purpose of Music
Making you think twice about what you're listening to.
Music to me is the interpretation of someones creative mind through the use of sound. Creativity isn't the only factor though. A person needs to have the right purpose when creating music. That right purpose mixed with their own creativity and skills should achieve a sound that's personal and unique.
With mainstream electronic music I feel like the producers purpose has been skewed. When I listen to this music I can't figure out who the person behind the music is. I can't see where they used their creativity and individuality in the music. When I think about their purpose all I can imagine is, money and power, it's cheesy to say that but it's true. Their purpose is to make money and with money comes power, headlining the biggest festivals, getting on the cover of DJ mags, getting residencies at the top clubs around the world...
But what about the respect factor? Well as soon as you decide that money and power is your purpose, in my mind, you have chosen to forfeit the idea of respect. All these "super producers" who can make a dance floor crushing track in a hour because they have figured out the formula and have succumbed to the formula, they will never be truly happy. Without respect from the right people all the money and power is meaningless. They will never have respect from other producers who have the right purpose and they will never have respect from true music lovers who look for the right purpose in their music. That's why I never give in to the masses, that's why I stick to my purpose, that's why I can sleep at night...
Now you might be thinking, what is the right purpose? We'll there is no single right purpose to creating music, it's different for every person. I know that I don't respect the sole purpose of money and power, I also know I don't respect music that's purpose is to fit into a mainstream formula. You as the listener have to determine what you believe the purpose is and then decide if you agree with it or not. You and only you can determine the purpose of music.
