Hi, I'm writing a story set in a fantasy world. My protagonist is hearing impaired and communicated through telepathy. How can I write it without the reader noticing she is "deaf"? I want the other characters to think she is mute or maybe a bit arrogant, because she doesn't hear them when they come running. I wanted them to only notice when one of the other characters notices it. Thanks!
We at @scriptwitchcraft are not entirely sure this ask belongs in our box. We would suggest going to @super–script or @script-a-world as this struck us as more their territory.
We would also softly suggest reexamining the deaf character having a means of “compensation” for her deafness. Obviously your story is yours, but this is a rather ableist trope that is used with concerning frequency within speculative fiction as a means of having a disabled character, but not actually engaging with the disability itself.
