23. “You have a picture of me? On your fridge?”
“Can you grab me a beer while you’re up, Luthor?”
Kara shoots Alex a look as she follows Lena to the kitchen. “Don’t be rude, she’s a guest.”
“I’m a guest too,” Alex calls back. “So you can get me a drink now that you’re up instead.”
Kara pokes her tongue out at her sister before she turns back towards the kitchen to find Lena staring at the door of the fridge.
“You do know how to open a fridge, right?” Kara jokes, only to frown when Lena doesn’t laugh. Lena always laughs at her jokes, no matter how bad they are.
“You-“ Lena cuts herself off, turns to Kara. “You have a picture of me? On your fridge?’
Kara turns to the picture in question, a picture of the two of them, smiling at the camera, their faces pressed close. It’s from a week ago, when Kara had persuaded Lena to take the afternoon off and they went to the park for ice cream instead, spent all afternoon sitting on a picnic blanket, talking and watching dogs and children run around the park. It had been the best afternoon Kara’s had in a long time.
“Yeah?” Kara suddenly feels like she’s done something wrong. Is it weird to have a picture of your best friend on the fridge? “Is that okay?”
“Why?” Lena looks more confused than Kara’s ever seen her.
“Why do I have a picture of you on my fridge?” Kara clarifies. She feels just as confused as Lena looks.
“Because you’re my best friend.” Kara says with a shrug and smile at Lena. “Because that was one of the best days I’ve had in a long time and this is my new favourite photo of us.”
Kara’s not sure what Lena is asking about but all of that is true. “Really.”
“Can you send me the photo?” Lena asks shyly. “I think I need a copy for my desk, that was one of the best days I’ve had in a long time too.”
“Of course,” Kara smiles, butterflies fluttering in the stomach at the thought of Lena wanting a photo of them on her desk. Kara slips her hand into Lena’s. “Can we do that again sometime soon? I really like spending time with you.”
Lena’s cheeks turn a gorgeous red. “I’d like that.”
Kara can’t look away, feeling like this conversation holds more weight than just their words.
There’s commotion across the room, drawing Kara’s attention and she turns to see Alex throwing popcorn at Winn. Right, they’re not alone and she was getting Alex a beer.
Lena gives Kara’s hand a squeeze. “We better get back before they kill each other,” Lena says.
Kara laughs when she sees Maggie has joined in the fight and she knows Lena’s right. Kara reluctantly lets Lena’s hand go as she grabs Alex’s drink and Lena grabs one for herself. But as they settle back onto the couch, Lena pressed close to her side as their friends joke around them, Kara thinks tonight is another one of those really good days too.
