Turn the World to Gold by Teacass + Superhoney

Just as Dean is starting to get comfortable at his new mining job in Nevada, the site is shaken by the announcement of a six-week visit from a team of consultants hired to make changes to the practices and procedures of the mine. Among that team is Castiel Novak, one of the most coolly infuriating, stuck-up, unfairly attractive men Dean has ever met.

The friction between them comes to a head during an unexpected but scorching hot makeout session at a company picnic, and they soon fall into a pattern of hooking up at the site or after work at Castiel’s hotel. But it’s just sex, or so they keep telling themselves. Castiel is only in Nevada for six weeks. They’ll have their fun, and then it’ll be over. But as those six weeks go by and they gradually get to know each other, both of them find themselves wondering if there might be a chance it could become something more.

For this year's @deancaspinefest​, I was lucky enough to get to create some art for the lovely Teacass & Superhoney! Turn the World to Gold is gloriously piney, and I struggled to find just one moment to illustrate. My shortlist had about twenty scenes listed in the end... as you can see, I managed to whittle that list down to five.

I’m feeling a bit self-indulgent writing this review, because not only was this story written for a challenge I help to run (@deancas-sweetheart), but it was also written by my dear co-owner of this blog, Lauren! None of this matters, though, because the story is great anyway. Especially if you’re looking for something short, sweet, and sexy.

This fic features our favourite boys as the Olympics athletes — Cas is a speed skater, and Dean is a hockey player. As you can imagine, they train a lot, which means meetings in a gym or after particularly strenuous workout sessions. What is more — Cas is Russian… and they’re both just so cute together. Including plenty of mentions of Cas’ mighty thighs, this is a perfect fic for you to read when you have a moment to spare, and especially when it’s still a little bit too cold outside. Just let this story heat you up a bit from the inside!

This is my fave because: This story was written for the Destiel Harlequin Challenge, and though I say this every time I write something new, I think it’s the most self-indulgent thing I’ve ever written. If something seemed too cheesy, too contrived, or too melodramatic– I did it anyway, in the spirit of Harlequin. And it was incredibly liberating to write that way. It was also fun to experiment a bit with style to suit the setting. I really fell in love with these versions of the characters, so much so that I’m currently working on a sequel!

Summary: Castiel Novak had it all: good looks, a fast car, and a family fortune that meant he never had to work a day in his life. Some would say there was more to life than those things, but Castiel never cared to find out-- not until he met Dean.

Dean, who came into Castiel’s life in a flurry of flashing lights, pounding bass, and sweat-slicked skin. He was challenging, charming, and completely, utterly captivating.

If only Castiel hadn’t made such a terrible first impression.

Comments: 7/10. Dean has a lot of self-respect for a stripper AU, and Cas is surprisingly contrite. Cas makes a horrible first impression when they meet at a party where Dean is dancing, but Cas tracks him down and apologizes. From there on they grow closer and form a relationship. Not terribly angsty, and Dean is surprisingly well-adjusted.

Summary: Dean's life has always been dictated by duty rather than by need. So when Amara offers to give him the thing he needs most, he doesn't know what to expect, but it certainly isn't this: a chance to rest, some time away from his life and his burdens. Now he's trapped in an enchanted sleep, unable to bring himself back to the waking world.

It's up to Sam and Castiel to gather the components of a spell that will bring Dean back to them. Through road trips, honest conversations, and a lot of patience, they'll make sure Dean comes home. And when he does, maybe he and Castiel will finally have a chance to act on long-buried feelings brought to the surface by their enforced separation.

“It is like Sleeping Beauty,” Rowena says, her lip curling slightly. “He’s in a state of rest, so to speak. The body is living, but the spirit is absent.”

“Absent,” Sam repeats. “Where is it?”

“That doesn’t matter,” Castiel says, more harshly than he intended. “How do we get it back?”

How do we get him back is the real question. Castiel is not prepared to live in this world without Dean. He wasn’t prepared when they said goodbye in that cemetery, and now that they’ve saved the world, again, it needs Dean Winchester in it again, living and breathing and laughing and teasing Castiel about his crappy car.

He needs Dean back.

“I don’t know the exact spell that was used, but I can guess it was Amara,” Rowena says thoughtfully. “The magic feels like her, somehow.”

“Dark?” Sam asks, frowning.

Rowena shakes her head. “No, but calm. Empty. Still. The absence of creation. That’s what we have here,” she says, indicating Dean’s body. “It feels restful, in its own way.”

Sam and Castiel exchange troubled glances. “So you’re saying this is a good thing,” Sam says.

“I highly doubt I’m the one who should be judging what’s good and what’s evil,” Rowena replies. “But I think it was done with good intentions, yes. This was a reward, not a punishment.”

“It’s not a reward for us,” Castiel says quietly. Perhaps Rowena is right. Perhaps Dean is resting, unburdened for once. Away from the weight of the world, the problems he carries on his shoulders.

But he never wanted that for himself, not really. At least not for long. Just long enough to recharge, to review his priorities. He remembers Dean telling him, all those years ago: “I just need like, four hours.” Just enough to keep going.

“So how do we get him back?” Sam asks again, and Castiel is grateful for it. Sam is the one who Dean would want making these decisions for him. If Sam thinks they should wake Dean up, then that’s what they’ll do.

“We need to guide his spirit back to his body,” Rowena says. “Remind him that they’re one.”

“Could you be more cryptic, Mother,” Crowley mutters under his breath. Judging by the glare Rowena sends in his direction, she hears him.

“It’s simply enough in theory,” she continues. “We’ll need...tokens, so to speak. To coax him back. Things that remind him of his life, his memories, his experiences. Seven would be best. It’s a powerful magical number.”

Castiel begins to grasp the theory behind the spell. “Positive memories,” he says. “We want to remind him what’s important. And then he will be drawn back.”
